I indeed did not know goiter was still such spread in some countries. Do you have quantitative estimates of the number of cases for hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism by any chance (I like connecting words with numbers, to make it more concrete in my mind :) ).
Thanks in advance!
Yes sir @lemouth , goiter is still a significant health problem in some countries, especially in Africa. Goiter caused by iodine deficiency is on the decline in many regions due to iodine supplementation but autoimmune diseases like graves disease are still on the increase and commonly present with painless goiter and Hyperthyroidism.
A Research Gate publication in August 2022 showed that,
In a 2019 study by the National Health Institute,
For my country, Nigeria, 2019 Study published in Research Gate showed that for 260 patients studied,
Then finally, from my personal experience in the teaching hospital where I am, there are cases of hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism almost on every week of the Endocrinology Clinic day in the Medical outpatient clinic.
In the Surgery department too, there are goiter cases booked for thyroidectomy at least one in every two .
However, there are environmental factors that affect the incidence of thyroid disorders in each geographical location.
Thanks so much, sir.
Wow, those are much more common than what I would have expected. Thanks for the links and the numbers (as well as for the personal insight).
Cheers!
Yeah, indeed they are.
You're welcome Sir. Many thanks
