THE STUDY OF THE MOON (EARTH SATELLITE)

in StemSocial3 years ago

The Earth's satellite is known as the MOON, it is a natural satellite that was gifted to the earth by the creator of the universe, it is the largest natural.sattelite in the whole solar system and the fifth largest satellite in the solar system. It is more or less about one quarter of the diameter of the earth which can be likened to the width of Australia. It is also likened to the size of a planet and also.larger than dwarf planets.

The moon was believed to be formed from the debris gotten from the collision between a planet almsoy the same size as mars called Theia and am infant earth.

According to research and assumptions it was believed that about 4.5 billion years ago there there would have been many planets and protoplanets that would have been overlapping and unstable which will bring them to colliding with each other.

The collision between two bodies which are of almsit the same size could have vaporised them both leaving a mixture of their heated gases and their molten minerals turning around under gravity pull.

Some of the materials that was brought back by Apollo support the hypothesis, the precise age of the moon isn't certain but was tagged around 4.425 billion or 4.5 billion years with an explanation that it was formed from the remains of another young planet which is called synestia.

It lacks important atmosphere, hydrosphere or a magnetic field with a gravity of 0.165g which is one sixth of Earth's gravity. The only satellite to have a very high gravity in the solar system is the Jupiter's moon.

The moon orbits earth with an average distance of 384,400Km or simply stated as 30 times if the Earth's diameter, it's gravitational influence makes the days on Earth a bit lengthy. It orbits around the earth in 27.3 days in a sidereal period and 29m5 days in a synodic period.

The moon is locked to the earth in a tidal way which means it is sync to the earth in such a way that the rotation only allows for one side of the moon to always face the earth at all time while the other part is hidden from the earth and can't be seen.

The other half which is usually reffered to as the dark side although it gets the same amount of sunlight as the other half was seen for the first time when Soviet Probe Luna 3 brought back a grainy set of photographs in 1959.

The Earth's rotation is affected by the braking effect of the moons gravity which adds about 1.4 milliseconds to the days of the earth every century. Also, the moon is moving away from the earth gradually moving about 30 centimeter away from it's orbiting distance each year, when it was formed 4.5 billion years ago it was believed to be 16 times closer to the earth and makes it 24times larger when viewed in the sky.

SOME INTEREST FACTS ABOUT THE MOON

1 The moon is the second densiest satellite after Jupiter's satellite

2 The moon is the only natural satellite which is permanent for Earth

3 The moon only shows one of its half to the earth

4 The sun and the moon doesn't have the same size as the moon is 400 times smaller than the sun

5 The moon has a dark surface

6 The moon keeps moving away from the earth as time goes by

7 The room was believed to be made when
a rock smashed the earth

8 The moon experience quakes as well which are known as moon quakes which are caused by the gravitational influence of the planet Earth

9 Prior to believe that the moon is a dry land there is actually water on the moon which is in the form of ice that has been trapped between dust and minerals

10 The moon causes the tides of the ocean and seaa on Earth

The compounds and composition of the moon is stated below

HIGHLANDS

  1. Silica (SiO2) - 45.5%
  2. Alumina (AL2O3) - 24.0%
  3. Lime (CaO) - 15.9%

COMPOSITION OF THE MOON

The Earth's moon us made up of a core, crust and mantle, the moon's core is smaller compared to other terrestrial bodies core, it's inner cute which is iron rich and solid is 240 km in radius and surrounded by a liquid iron of 90 km thick with a partial molten layer with thickness of 150 km which surrounds the iron core.

The crust is made up of a thuvhness of 70 km on the moon's near side hemisphere and 150 km on the far side, it is composed of oxygen, magnesium, silicon, iron, calcium with aluminium with little amount if uranium, titanium, thorium, hydrogen and potassium.

The mantle is extended from the top of the partially molten layer of the core to the bottom of the moon crust. It is made of minerals like olivine and pyroxene which are composed of iron, silicon, Oxygen, and magnesium atims. The moon usually have volcanoes long ago but they have been dormant for millions of years now.

I remember a very nice documentary on the moon shown at a planetarium in Paris. This was starting in a similar way as your blog, with the collision between Earth and Theia. This is however still a hypothesis as proofs are missing.
