Hi @mathowl,

I'm not sure about the technicalities, but Penrose used diagram conformally equivalent to the actual metric in spacetime to make the "conformal boundary" of the "past".

I won't be able to explain it better than in this wiki page [Basic construction] section, and this wiki page for diagram.
