This is the story of Rico, a little monkey in the hands of a family of abusers or simply irresponsible and no matter how hard we tried, he returned with them.

Hello Hive community, I don't know if you already know from my first post, that I am a Veterinary Doctor, working in a Veterinary Clinic on the African continent, specifically in Luanda, the capital of Angola. This country has an infinity of natural resources and a very varied fauna, so it is not uncommon for monkeys, parrots, lizards and sometimes even a snake to be brought to my consult, we have to deal with that variety here, haha.

One of the things that we really lack in this beautiful country are laws that help protect these animals from the hands of irresponsible, abusive and unscrupulous people. It is not uncommon either, to see responsible families on a day-to-day basis, that despite the fact that I am not very in favor, they bring their little monkey to be dewormed, to routine consults and to be vaccinated against rabies, a very dangerous disease that we also have.

The first impression was an ape with behavioral disorders, a very great aggressiveness, characteristic of his species due to: captures of adult animals, of which I am completely against, mistreatment at home or some illness that left him with a very bad character. It turns out that just starting to interview and take a look at the poor animal, it was clear what his problem was, Rico, which is his name, had a terrible wound on his waist due to a leash that was holding him and had grown around this, penetrating into his abdominal tissues, the pain he suffered was almost unbearable.

We managed to convince his “owners” to hospitalize him, to sedate him, and to be able to monitor him for more than a week. It turns out that Rico, that irritable and aggressive monkey, on the second day, after being operated on and medicated with strong painkillers, began to socialize with everyone in the clinic, he stole a smile from us and stole our hearts, we all brought him fresh food several times a day, and he loved being tickled on the head.

Finally, and without being able to do anything else, with no laws or competent authorities to report these abuses, Rico returned to his house, or perhaps to his prison, where every day we wonder what became of him. If we have any final knowledge of his whereabouts, I'll tell you right away.

The human being has to stop being so selfish and trying to manipulate nature at will, without responsibility. Wild fauna must remain that way and we should only intervene to protect a life and reincorporate a species after curing it.

We have already begun to discuss with the authorities the issue of a possible law of care and protection in the future, it is a long and tortuous road but the "Ricos" deserve it.

a horror story this truly is, for the owners to even wait to have that leash escalate to that state 😥 we can only hope for Rico's health and safety after experiencing such an ordeal, appreciate your sharing this tale as a form of awareness to us 😊

Thanks a lot for your comments, we will keep working to help all Rico´s we can. And shearing my modest experiences, try to inspirate people to make good thins for all living species, including of course our own kind.
