TOM, JERRY, AND I

in Hive Petslast year

It happened in the midlle of the day this time. Bembo, one of my cats, caught in the garden a young rat the size of a mouse and brought him into the house. The rat was still alive. Unlike some other of my cats that eat rats and mice, Bembo usually treats its prey like a living toy or an involuntary playmate.

Since I was getting a bit tired of rescuing rats from the cats inside the house and then chasing them out of the house, I chased Bembo out while the young rat was still in his mouth. Bembo was holding the rat more or less like a mother cat would hold a kitten.
So the rat was alive but these kinds of games can suddenly turn deadly so I was hoping for an opportunity to bring him somewhere safe. Because... yeah, I like rats. Mice too. I like all kinds of pests even if it is against my interest.

At one point Bembo released the rat and the rat climbed on the low fence around the part of the yard in which the gas reservoir for heating the house is situated. Bembo was ready to strike again when I put my hand in front of the rat that soon climbed my arm ...

... and found a safe place on the top of my head. With the little rat on me, I decided to walk to the tool shed on the opposite side of the yard becouse that looked like a good place for a rat to hide, recover from this crisis, and continue its existence.

With the rat on my shoulder, near my ear, I felt like the Djinn from the 1940 movie The Thief of Bagdad
I adored that old movie when I was a kid and is still among my top Fantasy/Adventure movies of all time.
Abu, the young protagonist of the movie was small like this rat on the shoulder of the Djinn which came out of the bottle that was lying on some beautiful deserted beach, if I remember correctly.
I imagine the rat feeling the same sense of wonder while being transported by a giant. The only difference is that the Djinn could fly, I can't.

When we reached the safe destination, I crouched and the rat jumped on one of the shelves in the semi-open tool shed that hosts various gardening-related stuff and offers some nice hideouts for small animals.

Here you can see Bembo watching the rat on the top of my head and wondering how the world can turn upside down & crazy so quickly.

And that's it. Hope you enjoyed this little true story from my yard. It all happened only a couple of hours ago. It's still fresh like the news reports one can see on the TV.

The photographs in which you can see me and the rat were taken by a friend who was there with me. I photographed the last shot. The one in which Bembo is watching the observer.

This is picture book material that would sell many, many copies, my friend.

You are my hero. I can only wish that my physical self was as compassionate as my spiritual self. The latter wants all animals to live happily, vermin and pests included. The former unwillingly swats at the mere touch of a rat--or a cockroach, or an innocent gecko.

Now you can say that your head is both a part of your body and a sanctuary.

Bembo's face is priceless, heheh.

... and yes, I understand the inner conflict between love for all living things and an instinctive ... or I don't know, maybe socially induced repulsion we humans feel when it comes to some species. I felt that way towards the spiders. I liked them, I always liked their colors and interesting behavior, but there was something disturbing in their shape
Now after photographing them and insects for years, I somehow naturally overcame that repullsion. When I don't see them as little crawling things from a distance but see them up close through the macro lens - "in the eyes" so to speak, I perceive them very differently.

Now I'm OK with a spider crawling on my hand, a decade ago I would panic.

Ok. I need to buy a good camera and start photographing all kinds of creatures. I think it's OK to fear the poisonous ones, for example. But we all live here.

Thank you so much for liking and respecting animals ❤️

Did I ever tell you about the time I cared for 23 mice? I didn't volunteer for the job, but it fell to me. I kept them from birth until (natural) death.

It is possible to love just about anything :)

Great blog. Great pictures. Lucky rat.

Wow. 😃 That's a story! Didn't know about that. How did it happen to be?

I wrote about it once on Hive. Years ago my daughter somehow came by two white mice. She couldn't watch them anymore and asked me to care for them. I did. Unfortunately the female (they were a mated pair!) had babies. I had no idea mice were so fertile. A mouse can become pregnant within 24 hours of giving birth!! The female had another litter. By that time, I was educated in mouse fertility but it was too late. 23 mice in all.

The males started to attack each other and had to be separated. The females got along fine. Eventually I had a whole room dedicated to mouse aquariums, one for each male and a very large aquarium for the many females. All the males had names. The females were sometimes indistinguishable from each other, though the matriarch remained distinct.

Everybody had a wheel and a hut. It was quite noisy :))

The last mouse died about two years later. I was very sad, believe it or not. I even had to have one euthanized. It had developed a horrible skin rash.

That's my mouse story. So, you see, I found the pictures of your little rodent quite touching. 🐁

Now I vaguely remember that you wrote it. 🙂 But I didn't remember the details so thank you for writing it again here.
You did a good job and a good deed raising mice 🙂and this story is pretty unique and touching.

I definitely believe that you were sad when the mice died. After everything you and the mice went through together, an emotional connection was inevitable.

🐁It's an epic little true story. Very memorable. 🐀

I'm still feeding the rat hidden in the Kitchen sink cabinet. I have to befriend him to get a chance to get him out of the house alive. 🐀Imagine a rat that lives surrounded by seven cats, many of whom would gladly kill a rat and some of them will surely eat him.
Maybe he will spend in that cabinet the rest of his life. This is also a possibility. The good thing is that since he gets delicious food delivered in the cabinet, I don't see any signs of rat activity anywhere else in the kitchen. I clean the cabinet every day becouse it stinks like a mini zoo, and everything works with no big problems so far.

With all the blogging on Hive, I don't have the time to spend some an hour or so in front of the cabinet to get the rat costumed to my presence when I bring the food, that's the only problem. I think that if I would sit down there and spend a couple of hours reading to kill the time, the rat and I would get OK relatively quickly. It works with insects and lizards when I'm photographing outdoors.

I clean the cabinet every day because it stinks like a mini zoo,

😅

I forgot to mention the smell. Took a lot of cage cleaning to keep the house from reeking of mouse musk😄

I don't have the time to spend some an hour or so in front of the cabinet to get the rat costumed to my presence when I bring the food,

🌈

I found the mice were sociable to varying degrees. Some would come out of their cages and play on my hand. Others (particularly the patriarch) would bite me as I tried to socialize with them. I thought they must be very lonely, each in its own habitat. One was so terrified it never came out of its hut when I was close by. I called that mouse Hat Mouse because it was always under some sort of cover.

Your rat seems to be quite clever, although not avoiding cats doesn't seem to be very clever. Good luck with socializing this rat. Although perhaps you should get a tetanus booster, just in case it gets temperamental and gives you a nip. 😆 I got a booster after the first bite. I knew it wouldn't be my last.

Good luck with your little improbable pet. Please keep us informed. Quite a saga, in both cat and rodent world.

Thanks for the tetanus booster advice. 🙂

What a lovely story. Not many would save a rat but glad you did. I see one most nights at my local duck pond. I'm just not quick enough to take a photo.

🙂 I also rarely get the opportunity to photograph a rat or mouse. They are very fast.

Ha! True.

That was a beautiful and funny series! 🥰

The title of this post was funny, but the difference was that Tom (Bembo) did manage to catch Jerry this time ha ha ha. I think this little rat saw you as a giant savior, while Bembo looked at you with a face that said "that's mine" 😂. Nice to read you my friend, that rat will be grateful to you for life.

That photo of that mouse on your head is hilarious!! 😂

I've had dazed young rats do similar things. Damn cats that want to make toys out of their prey

I couldn't help but laugh and comment that's so adorable... I wonder, when will you start cooking? hehehe

Wow, how many rats and mice I have saved. I like all kinds of animals! Unfortunately, I cannot watch nature programs, which include hunting. I have two cats mother and son, the son has even brought in baby bunnies!
Such a nice little mouse you have on your head!

🙂 👍🙂

LEO Power Up Day - November 15, 2023

Wow!!! This looks very caring. I do love pets too, thanks for saving the rat, 🐀🐀🐀 you reminds me of some time ago when I was very tender, I and my brother caught three giant rat but they where haven't opened there eye. We went for hunting and we dug their hole and lay hold of their mother but she later escaped, so we where not to sure of her return so we decided to take care of the young rates. ❣️❣️❣️❣️

That's a cool story. 😃 This comment is like a post.

Hahahaha 🤣🤣🤣, I have written about it. Thanks for your support ☺️🙏🏽😊😊. We post share same love for pets ❤️❤️❤️

Haha, Bembo doesn’f look too impressed with what you did with the gift he gave you 😂

Seems like the rat has been expecting your presence 😁

Realmente be.bo es un gato 🐱 muy travieso, osea no las atrapa por hambre sino por diversión.

This made my day! 😂

Haha!

Hahaha! Seriously you are gradually looking for this cats trouble😂 always taking their precious meal away from them. Yesterday it was Sivka (correct me if I spelled the name wrongly) then today it's Bembo....well, the rat felt safe on your head that I am sure it wanted to there for life😀

😃 Yes, I'm seen as a party breaker.

Yeah your head is the safest place for the rat. The short story of Tom, Jerry and You is very cute one. It's sad that you can't fly like Djinn.

I agree. 😃 I would be considerably happier if I could fly like a Djinn.

Haha...rat found so safe place at the top of your head 😜
It was also a good thing that cat didn't harm the rat 😅

I can't help but feel goosebumps when I see you and a mouse, let alone holding it😖😖😖

This feel so scary tho, here in my country when they see you, they run because they see them as a pest😁😁

Here is no different. 😃 This rat climbed on me becouse the cat was more scary than me. Normally rats run away from people and people don't like them at all.

Yeah😄😄 and that's because they are pest and harmful to humans

Hahah lovely. I have often noticed that many cats prefer to play with mice rather than eat them. 🐁🐁🐁🐈🐈🐈

You are a rat lover. Honestly, I am afraid of rats. 😆

Hahaha! Naughty cats.
I also have a cat she is not naughty type , innocent lady but she also catch the rats from our kitchen sometimes but she never eat rat . Just make him at the edge of lifeless line and play with it throw here and there.
But cats are cute pets

True 😃 There is a lot of fun with cats around.

The post got me laughing so hard, the rat found a safe spot on your head, wow!🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

Bembo is like "Whose side are you on?" So the other encounter was with Sivka now Bembo, how many cats do you have?

Only seven 😂 ... plus one that appears once or twice in a week from somewhere else in the neiberhood.

Jeez! That's a lot😊😊, no peace for the rat in your neighbourhood.

My Aunt and me do not like rats and We just hate rats and mice too.
I don't know how many rats are present in my home and they are so irritated and destroying things which I don't like.
Recently I have a cat so rats became afraid of cato and leave our home.

Yes. If they are inside the house and if there are many of them the problems are serious. But in my case, the rodents are outside, and with seven cats around, they can't reproduce and survive in big numbers, so I'm not having the bad experience you just described.

The only difference is that the Djinn could fly, I can't.

You definitely would fly if that rat bit your ear or head while it was on you!

A friend of rats and mice? That is adorable. Bembo must be jealous @borjan

Good job! :D

Your cat's expression though 😆

Hahahah

I myself used to love these cartoons during my childhood and now the way we see the cat is looking at the mouse and wants to eat it but the mouse being sensible is in a place where It has climbed wherever the cat cannot go and eat.
