10 years ago I visited a couple of villages in Turkey. On the streets there were a lot of gigantic dogs. I was even afraid of going outside the car. Later, I found in the internet that those were Kangals and Alabais. 100-200 years in the Ottoman Empire they used these dogs for protecting the sheeps from the wolves. I'd never seen such dogs in my life before. Probably, except for a Caucasian shepherd.
