Hace más de treinta años los padres de mi esposa se vinieron a vivir a Caracas por solicitud de sus hijos mayores, mis cuñados, quienes por vivir en la ciudad capital decidieron que era mejor que sus padres, mis suegros, estuvieran cerca de ellos.
More than thirty years ago, my wife's parents came to live in Caracas at the request of their older children, my brothers-in-law, who, because they lived in the capital city, decided that it was better for their parents, my in-laws, to be close to them.
Al venirse para la capital de la República dejaron sola su casa en el hoy, Municipio Santa Bárbara del Estado Monagas, por lo que le pidieron a mi esposa que se fuera conmigo a vivir allá para que la propiedad no estuviera sola; así lo hicimos.
When they came to the capital of the Republic, they left their house alone in what is now the Santa Bárbara Municipality of Monagas State, so they asked my wife to go live with me there so that the property would not be empty; so we did.
Al llegar a la casa me di cuenta que era muy grande para nosotros dos; sin embargo, asumimos con responsabilidad el cuidado y mantenimiento de esa propiedad. La casa estaba construida en la esquina derecha del enorme terreno, al lado un estacionamiento para cinco carros aproximadamente, en el fondo un patio grande sembrado de árboles frutales donde los mango y aguacates dominaban las alturas y en tiempos de cosecha hacían del piso una alfombra de hojas y frutos impresionante que recogíamos y limpiábamos con frecuencia para evitar insectos y otros bichos, alrededor del inmenso terreno las plantas de piña demarcaban la periferia de la propiedad.
When I arrived at the house I realized that it was too big for the two of us; however, we took responsibility for the care and maintenance of that property. The house was built on the right corner of the enormous lot, next to a parking lot for approximately five cars, in the back a large patio planted with fruit trees where mango and avocado trees dominated the heights and at harvest time they made the floor an impressive carpet of leaves and fruits that we collected and cleaned frequently to avoid insects and other bugs, around the immense lot the pineapple plants demarcated the periphery of the property.
Un día, viendo que en el patio picoteaban una gallina fina y un gallo pataruco que habían dejado mis suegros, a mi amada esposa se le ocurrió la genial idea de comprar veinte pollitos más para criarlos. Cuando yo llegue del trabajo a descansar me encontré el gran concierto onomatopéyico "Pío-pío" que no me dejó descansar e inmediatamente recordé
la canción infantil:
"Los pollitos dicen:
pío, pío, pío,
cuando tienen hambre,
cuando tienen frío... "
Junto a este concierto la Gallina con su cacarear y el Gallo con su estruendosa y también peculiar onomatopeya "quiquiriquí" o "kikiriki".
One day, seeing a fine hen and a fat-headed rooster that my in-laws had left pecking in the yard, my beloved wife had the brilliant idea of buying twenty more chicks to raise. When I came home from work to rest, I found the great onomatopoeic concert "Pío-pío" that did not let me rest and immediately I remembered
the children's song:
***"The chicks say:
pío, pío, pío,
when they are hungry,
when they are cold..." ***
Along with this concert the Hen with her cackling and the Rooster with his thunderous and also peculiar onomatopoeia "cock-a-doodle-doo" or "cock-a-doodle-doo".
Así pasaron los días hasta que los pollos crecieron y se hicieron fuertes, listos para convertirse en la proteína animal de un suculento sancocho, al mejor estilo del que hacía mi mamá los días domingo. Le propuse la idea a mi esposa pero ella se negó rotundamente a matar uno para alegrar nuestro paladar.
So the days went by until the chickens grew and became strong, ready to become the animal protein for a succulent sancocho, in the best style that my mother made on Sundays. I proposed the idea to my wife but she flatly refused to kill one to please our palates.
Al ver que Mercedes, mi esposa, se entristecía cada vez que yo le sugería matar uno de sus animales, decidí desistir de la idea y acepté que esas aves de corral eran sagradas para ella, que vivirían felices por el resto de sus días picoteando el maíz que yo les compraba.
Seeing that Mercedes, my wife, became sad every time I suggested killing one of her animals, I decided to give up the idea and accepted that those poultry were sacred to her, that they would live happily for the rest of their days pecking at the corn I bought them.
Lo triste de esta anécdota fue que al regresar de uno de los viajes que realizábamos con frecuencia a Guatire a visitar a mi mamá, llegamos a la casa y sólo encontramos en el patio a la gallina fina y al gallo pataruco, los veinte pollos no estaban; habían desaparecido como por arte de magia. Con este inesperado hecho se cumplió la expresión idiomática o el refrán popular, "brillaban por su ausencia".
The sad thing about this anecdote was that when we returned from one of the trips we frequently made to Guatire to visit my mother, we arrived home and found only the fine hen and the pataruco rooster in the yard; the twenty chickens were gone; they had disappeared as if by magic. With this unexpected event, the idiomatic expression or popular saying was fulfilled, "they were conspicuous by their absence."
Hasta el Sol de hoy desconocemos el destino de nuestros veinte pollos, sabemos que no fue un Zorro o ningún otro depredador animal que se los comió porque no encontramos ningún rastro fáunico sino huellas humanas; lo que nos hizo presumir, que los habían hurtado, creo que a los veinte los invitaron a un suculento sancocho y ellos no pudieron negarse degustando así el paladar de los ladrones.
To this day we do not know the fate of our twenty chickens. We know that it was not a fox or any other animal predator that ate them because we found no trace of fauna but human footprints; which made us assume that they had been stolen. I think that the twenty were invited to a succulent stew and they could not refuse, thus tasting the palate of the thieves.
Nota: La Gallina era de raza fina, muy difícil de agarrar, era la madre de unos excelentes Gallos de pelea que tenía el Sr. Luis Jiménez, padre de mi esposa. A la heróica Gallina la bautizamos con el nombre Macha (como la mascota de Thalia, en su personaje de Marimar) y al Gallo, Claudio, el que aparece en muchas caricaturas de Warner Brothers.
Note: The hen was a fine breed, very difficult to catch, she was the mother of some excellent fighting cocks that Mr. Luis Jiménez, my wife's father, had. We baptized the heroic hen with the name Macha (like Thalia's pet, in her role as Marimar) and the rooster, Claudio, the one that appears in many Warner Brothers cartoons.
