I consider my pets as my blessings. They are the ones that bring me joy when I am down and are there when I need some comfort.
While there is joy in having pets, there is also responsibility that comes with it. Food and shelter are among the necessary things that an animal should have access to. But there is more than that. Another side of pet ownership that should be more talk about.
Let me tell you in this blog my reality as a pet owner. The reality is that it is never easy.
If I'll tell you a reason why you should never get a pet then what I'll tell you is that it is COSTLY. You have read it right! Taking care of pets is just so easy but the responsibilities that comes along with it is not. Having a pet is like having your own baby, an infant that you should take care of and give the necessary things that it needs. It needs water, food, clothes, vitamins, and a home. These are just the common things that it needs to survive.
So, why do I say that having a pet is costly? Being a pet owner is not just about providing food and shelter to your animals but it also should be being able to afford them to visit the veterinarian for their vaccination to protect them from diseases. On top of that are some instances where your pet would be needing surgical interventions .
As a pet owner and also someone who is studying the field of veterinary medicine, it pains me to see animals that are not getting the medical attention that they need. Stray animals on the roads and puppies and kittens being dump in the trash and in empty lots. And as much as we advocate for adoption, we should also advocate for long term solutions which is neutering our pets. Because neutered animals can't reproduce means there will be less puppies and kittens that will be homeless. So, if there's a veterinary medical mission in your area, grab the chance and have your pets neutered. It is not only to stop the animals from reproducing but also a way to avoid irresponsible people to become pet owners.
So, if you'll be wanting to have a pet one day, THINK, CHECK, and ASK.
THINK if it is the best idea for you to have one. CHECK if your financially capable. And lastly, ASK yourself if you are ready for another responsibility aside from yourself.
