“Dinner Date” - Episode 1 (Short Story)

in Indiaunited6 days ago

“Just gimme 10mins, I will quickly finish the call and then we can go,” I replied to my wifey's shoutings.
“Arey baba you said we would leave by 6 now it is 6:40. Jaana hain ya nahi” She was still furious. [Eng Trans. - Are we leaving or not]
“Gimme 10mins. Ok. I will finish the call and then we can go.” I replied saying the same thing for the last 30-odd minutes.
“Okay. Jaldi karo.” [Eng Trans. - Make it fast]
“That idiot is not answering his phone, re baba. Otherwise, we would have reached Vijayarani by now.” I tried to fill the wait time with the reasons why we were not at the restaurant.
“Koi nahi, wait karte hain.” [Eng Trans. - Its ok, will wait.]
I received a call from an unknown number. My face lit up. Showing the phone to wifey and gesturing that it won't take much time.

“Hello!!!” I answered.
“Hello Sir, This is Sunil from Vijayarani. We have been waiting for you for more than 10 minutes. Will you be able to make your dinner reservations?” The voice on the phone asked.
I panicked and looked at the watch.
“Ummm, Can you please hold that for another 30 minutes?” I asked.
“Sorry sir, It's Valentine's Day and we have a long queue. The best I can do is 10mins.” The voice replied.
“Oh! I don't think we can make it.” I accepted my fate. I am going to be executed tonight.
“Ok Sir, Thank you. We are proceeding with cancellation. Have a wonderful evening.” The voice on the phone has no idea that he is wishing a dead man.
I hung up and my eyes met my wife’s. She already had that sadness mixed with disappointment. After all, it was my Idea for us to go out and have dinner. Just the two of us. We already sent the kid to his aunt in the evening.

“What happened?” She asked.
“The reservation got cancelled,” I replied in a weak tone.
“No, the reservation wasn't cancelled, we didn't show up on time.” She corrected me.
“It is ok, we will go somewhere else. Anyway, Vijayarani is overrated.” I tried damage control.
“No.” She replied with a flat tone.
“Vijayarani is not overrated?” I asked.
“No, I am not going out,” she replied and slumped into the sofa. Not minding that her dress creases are getting ruined. Not a care on her face.
My phone blinked. It was a message from the team member. “Call rescheduled for Tuesday, Regard GK”
‘Great I stayed late for nothing’ I thought to myself.
I was expecting a full frontal assault but this reaction from her caught me off guard.
“Hey I am sorry, I wish I finished this earlier” I pointed to my laptop with the open presentation.
“No, it is ok.” She replied.
To my surprise she was taking it well, Usually, such incidents invite a big fight and taunts but nothing like that tonight.
‘I should call it Valentine’s Day miracle and call it day.’ I thought to myself.
“Hey, let us go to the Mall then we can have something to eat there. And you can shop” I asked.
“Nope, I’m not in the mood.” She replied.
Code Red - Wifeys heading for a cold war. Alert was issued in my brain. Act immediately.
“Hey, I am really sorry.” I apologise for being late.
“Arey jaane de. Irritate mat karo abhi.” with that she left for the bedroom. [Eng Trans -- Let it go, and don't irritate me.]

Based on a true story? XD

I'm going to be very disappointed if that character hasn't started putting their foot down and if the call they're expecting is late then it doesn't get answered if they've got other engagements to deal with.

😂

This is a work of fiction. Any resemblance to actual persons, living or dead, or actual events is purely coincidental

Although I am keeping my promise and working at my convenience. I stayed up yesterday late night planning the deployment. Sent out the mail at 2 midnight and logged off. Will be meeting people Monday afternoon only.

How the Valentine's Day go for you?

LoL XD well if you do anything on that day I hope it went better than the character's ;D

I'm a still a bit uncertain about those working hours XP but keep putting your foot down, you have to keep the work managable.

Valentine's Day is a non-issue over here, J and I didn't acknowledge it and the closest I got to any festivities was my boss (who loves any random excuse to do something fun at work) asking us to wear pink (I did not have anything pink but Middle went to training in her pink leotard and pink shorts) and giving the coaches love heart stickers for their shirts, and also having to take Middle Valentine Day shopping just before training as between TAFE and work and training that was the only time she could fit it in XD

I don't know if it was just people Valentine Day shopping or the time we went or if there's just more people in general but the shop we went to felt a little bit insane even given that it's a large and popular shopping centre.

Pink used to be a very off-putting colour to me, But I learned to rock it like a boss.
I own a pink T-shirt. a pink V-neck, a Pink Shirt and a pink checker causal.

My working hrs are getting insane, But I spoke to my boss and asked for additional manpower yesterday
Hoping to get a positive response. I am looking for a secondary-level person this time, Entry level is not working anymore. I need people with experience in the field. I have been forced to hire base-level employees with zero experience and knowledge, I mean they are picking up things now. But The amount of time I spent on training them is insane. You know sometimes I have this strong urge to write a series like Office based on my personal experience.

😆

The shopping scenario here in Trichy is so much different. Being a Tier2 city, the customers get actual attention from store owners and I am not used to this. 😆

I can feel this. My dad was a lawyer snd just when we were about to step out, a client would show up. As for company and calls, do draw the boundaries and set away time for yourself and your family.

Just learning to say NO.
Although I still end up working overtime, like you said I need to define proper boundaries. Otherwise, I would end up like the characters in my story.
