I can't write fiction

Empty Chairs

“Sir, Sir..!!” The voice of the waiters broke me out of trance. “Huh?” I asked. “Shall I clean this up?” she pointed to the three cups of coffee at my table. “Haan.!” I replied. I checked the watch, not sure why. Not getting late for anything. The only plan for the evening was to meet up with friends even that got cancelled. I am not even sure why I showed up here in the first place.

And this is where I stop, At this point, all we have is a person, a waiter, 3 empty coffee cups, and a cancelled plan. I have a problem with writing stories. I am not sure what it really is perhaps I get too attached to the characters or the story or start chasing ghosts. The thing is when I am writing a serious post or a blog I have a subject and I steer around it. But when it's a story, I don't know what happens but I get distracted and that starts to reflect on the story. Take this instance for example. All of sudden out of nowhere my brain said to make the Waiter the Main Character give her a backstory on why is she working in the restaurant and make the guy someone who knew her. Let this guy humiliate her and give her more mental challenges and let her overcome. And change the title to broken plates. This is the direction my mind wants to take. I mean what the hell. The original idea was to have a guy wait on the table for friends who were not going to show up and have him spend time waiting for nothing to happen till the restaurant closed. Only to reflect on the waste of time in a positive life.

How am I supposed to write fiction when the story itself is changing with every word? I behave like my son, whenever I take him to the marketplace. He gets very excited. He knows he will be getting a new Toy for sure. But soon I see him running around counter to counter looking at the toy trying to pick the best one. He watches the Car, the excavator, the bus, the fire engine, the aeroplane, the tank all the things he wants, when I ask him to choose one, he would pick something that wasn't his initial choice. He would be buying a bike or a top or a toy gun. Not sure what to make of that but I think I passed those traits to him.

I want to write a story about nothing but it must be important. Not sure what to do in such a situation. I am happy about one thing though, I am writing, let the most of it be nonsense. But I am writing. I see that as a progress. I think I just have to keep practising and maybe I will stumble on the answer. Or someone is kind enough to explain what to do when you are trying to write fiction.

Hi Folks,

I haven't been able to write fiction. My drive is full of broken stories and outline but nothing is worth sharing. But I think by the end of this daily writing challenge I should be able to post some stories. Why I am saying all this out loud? The first step to finding the solution is to acknowledge that there is a problem. I mean that's how I quit smoking.
Anyway, that is it for today. I think today is Day 5 of the daily writing challenge.
Let me introduce you to the IndiaUnited and BeAwesome community. They are awesome communities. Check them out.

I hope you will write again after this post. But your brains works like mine. I write out all the characters to see how they fit in the story x

Exactly, and the characters get complicated and the story gets messed up. Right?
