“This is it. I am sorry, I thought it would be the best way to say goodbye.” I confessed. Sitting on the bench, looking at the sunset. What used to be our favourite spot will now witness a farewell.
“Don’t be sorry. It was nice of you to ask me out.” She replied.
“I wish things were..”
“Ah!!! Leave it. Everything is fine. You are fine. I am fine. I think of it as a beautiful end for otherwise a mediocre relationship.” She cut me off. What she said didn’t hurt me either. Words were harsh but true.
She's right. We had our chance and blew it. Nothing can make things right. Perhaps this is the best-case scenario.
“Ok then, I better get going before it gets awkward,” I said to her in the most awkward way possible.
“Stay a little longer.” She replied. Her voice was sweet as ever.
I decided to stay and enjoy the sunset. This time it was different. It was a silence that I was enjoying. Perhaps she was enjoying it too. The evening used to be romantic, full of love and promises of the future. Today was different, it was as if we both were paying a last visit to the moments we shared. Sad we are, for we are at the funeral of our relationship that suffered a failure. And perhaps a little relieved that it is over and we both can move on. I don’t want anything to do with her, and I think she wants me out of her life too. But here we are looking at the sunset together.
“So!! You found a place in Vizag?” she asked.
“Not yet. Although I am trying for an apartment near the coast.” I replied with a little unexpected excitement.
“Well, you always loved the beaches. Push harder. Go for it.”
“I am trying but some local celebrity is also eyeing the same property. Can go either way.” I clarified.
“And till then?” She asked.
“I am going to stay at Naveen’s,” I replied.
“Oh! Going back to that guy.” she surprised a little at the mention of Naveen. She should be because she is hearing that name after 4 years.
“Yup!! He is weird but he is a good fellow.” I tried defending him.
“Remember you are going to live with a PotHead. You just stay clear from all that stuff, OK.” She said. I was annoyed at her comment. Why would she care now?
“Actually!!, he managed to turn his life around. He is clean. Owns a place. And grown spiritual.” I replied. Her question kind of annoyed me a little as he was there in the beginning, he was there when nobody was ready to accept me and he is still welcoming me without any question or condition. She dont know him.
“Hmm, Good for him.” She replied.
We were still looking at the sun which almost vanished just a dusty yellow light in the sky, soon it will be dark. Kind of like our relationship.
“I think..”
“You think too much” she cut me off again.
“Yeah, I overthink!! And I think it's time.”
“Will we ever meet again?” She asked.
“Why!!! Do you want to?” I asked. I surprise myself with that question.
“Actually!!! Yes. Let's meet up once we are settled and achieved our dream. You know, you became a well-known writer and I be an actress. We both be married to famous people and have their kids. Living a good luxury life. Let's meet up then. That would be fun naa. We will be looking back to this moment laughing.” She said and laughed a little but with teary eyes.
The darkness almost caught up with us.
“Yeah Sure.” I lied. Further discussion on this matter would be pointless.
We got up from the bench, said goodbye, smiled and walked away in different directions.
