As we journey through life, there may be times when we struggle for direction or meaning. Especially in youth, we may not know our purpose or the goal of our life. Whatever point at which we find ourselves on the path, we'll be guided by our training and education, as well as our own subjective interpretation of the world around us. Here's a look at some images we may encounter along with some symbolic interpretations.
THE RIVER
It was the Buddha who attained enlightenment beside the river. The mind flows like a river as the stream of consciences passes through us. Will it be a blessing or a bother? The mind simply flows along. Thoughts enter the mind and they pass through. The enlightened soul refrains from clinging to the flickering thoughts, and simply observes the flow as is passes by. The current may flow rapidly, constantly filled with various changing impressions, yet the surface remains the same. It's simultaneously the same river, and yet never the same river.
THE FLAG
The Sanskrit word "jayapataka" means victory flag. The flag flies high on the field of battle to remind the warrior of their goal for which they fight. It encourages us on as we navigate the path. Or it is a warning, a red flag showing imminent danger to the wandering soul?
THE BRIDGE
If the river is wide and there's danger or risk, then the flag can show the way to the bridge. By crossing the bridge, we enter the new world on the other side. We pass over our tribulations and gain the freedom sought by all who know there is more than what we see on this side of the river. Also in the brain, we have the two hemispheres which are joined by the bridge, known in medical anatomy as the "corpus collosum". One who has a strong bridge can unite the two hemispheres and facilitate greater flow between the two sides, thus achieving full potential. How many actually realize just how important the bridge really is?
THE SUNRISE
A sign of rebirth, the sunrise in the east reminds the traveler of the destiny we all have to rise from the ashes, from the dead, to return once again for another round despite the end of the last round. The wanderer on the path of life looks to the east for enlightenment. When wholeness is achieved, then a metaphorical rebirth can occur. The Sun is reborn, like Christ or Osiris.
MANDALA OF WHOLENESS
When the enlightened one is reborn, a reawakening occurs. A sense of wholeness is the experience, symbolized by the circle. The circle with the centre in tact. The circle within a circle. The baby within the mother's womb. The new birth from within. Have you ever seen a new lemon growing inside the older lemon? Neither have I... until now.
THE NEW LIGHT VEHICLE
After wholeness or enlightenment is achieved, the traveler experiences the body in which they dwell as a light body, a new model, a powerful tool to be used in service. With this new greater vehicle the soul can travel as a passenger to ever new regions, never before seen. The body is merely the vehicle, while the soul is the passenger who is able to discard old vehicles and aquire new ones with each passing sunset and sunrise, having crossed the bridge to the other side. And that vehicle is for more service to the rest of humanity, to show the way so that all may regain what they may have lost though always had.
THE BED
Rest in peace, some may say, especially after the long journey on the way. The traveler who has crossed the bridge to the other side, may want to rest after the struggle, and when time is not an issue that may be possible. Yet when there are still so many other travelers on the way who also need to be shown the way, alerted by the signs, then there may be less time for rest. As long as one soul remains still trapped on the other side of the river, then the Bodhisattva does not rest or escape alone to liberation. It's all for one and one for all.
THE DOOR
When one door is closed, another opens. Going is like coming. The door to paradise is open to all who seek it. All that is required is letting go and leaving behind the old for the better new life that awaits. Prepare while it's possible, for we are always at the moment of transition through the door to the other side.
