Today is New Year's Eve, and households are bubbling with preparations for the big day. For the past couple of days, I have been discussing on my blog that, for the first time in my life, I didn't go home to spend the holiday season with my family. Holiday season without your loved ones is different. Not a totally bad kind of “different”, but a not-so-good one either. Taking a trip down memory lane, I remember how we used to celebrate the New Year when we were younger. The little kids would run wild, barefooted and excited. The smell of fried fish and meat fills the air, threatening our nostrils and making our mouths water. What is the big day without delicious meals? It was like a tradition to always prepare Jollof rice, fried rice, and sizzle it with fried chicken and beef, on Christmas and New Year’s Day. But now, things are different.
When I decided that I wouldn't be going home to celebrate Christmas and New Year with my family, I planned to stay indoors, binge watching anime and snacking or reading a novel. However, I soon realized that the holiday season is best spent with our loved ones. So, I started conversing with my hostel mates in school. Soon enough, we became a bit close. On Christmas day, we didn't have much fun since we didn't make plans for it, but we have made arrangements to take celebrations to the next level on the first day of the year. My friends and I came together and contributed for tomorrow's preparations. Day 30 of the Inleo prompts asks us what we are preparing for tomorrow, the first day of the year.
After minutes of deliberating on this matter, my friends and I decided to follow the usual Nigerian festive tradition- prepare Jollof rice, fried rice and salad. My friends would have loved to top it up with chicken, but when I told them I don’t like chicken, they decided to opt in for something else. Plus, the price of chicken in the market is not friendly. So, instead, we decided to go for beef. For the fried rice, we’d make it an A-class meal. What is a delicious meal without drinks to wash them down? For some reason, they put me in charge of the drinks. I haven't decided what drinks to buy, but I'm pretty sure I’d make the right choices.
Of course, we won’t just prepare the meals and eat it in our various rooms. What’s the point of celebrating if we not going to come together and enjoy ourselves. Just like we did on Christmas day, we gathered in one of the rooms and played music, although the music was too loud and not my taste, I enjoyed myself. I retired to bed with a tiny headache, but I guess it was worth it after all. The plan is to come together and eat the jollof rice, fried rice and salad. I haven't told my hostel mates that I don’t like salads. I didn't want them to see me as a picky eater (even though I am one), so I'd probably force myself to eat salad tomorrow. Then we'd vibe to music, dance and enjoy ourselves.
One of the guys offered to sponsor tomorrow’s night preparations. After we must have rested in the afternoon after eating, there is going to be another small party at night. One of the guys bought drinks, more alcohol and fruit juices to mix them. I know myself, I'll take a few rounds, vibe to the music and retire to my room to sleep.
In summary, although it would have been better to spend this season with my family, I'm sure they'd take this to the next level. However, spending the new years day in school with my hostel mates is not a totally bad idea.
