Today, almost everyone has a cell phone, even kids in elementary schools. When I was in elementary school, I was busy playing with stones and sticks. You see kids on social media platforms chatting and posting pictures of themselves, making you wonder what age they started using a cell phone. I don't know how it is in other households, but in my home, I wasn't allowed to use a cellphone until I reached a certain age. I'm pretty sure that’s the case in most African countries, at least Nigeria. Back then, parents wouldn't allow their kids to use cellphones because they believed it would distract them from focusing on their studies. I guess things have changed now.
Before I got my first cellphone, I relied on my siblings, especially my brother. On days when his mood was good, he willingly allowed me to play video games on his phone. On days when his mood was on the edge, slightly about to drop to negative, he sent me errands before he let me use it, and on bad days, he would not let me use it at all. On those days, I relied on my dad's small (button) phone. Unlike my brother’s phone, there were no cool video games on it. I still managed to do a few things. I remember opening my Facebook account on my dad's button phone.
Before I got my first cell phone, I had been fantasizing about the perfect phone. At first, I had no particular preference, all I just wanted was an android phone that had enough storage to accumulate enough games. Although I didn’t have a particular brand in mind, I loved techno products. Likely because my siblings and older siblings were using tecno phones at that time.
I got my first cell phone when I entered junior secondary school 3. My brother got a brand new cell phone and passed the old one down to me. About a year after, I got myself a new cell phone and passed that one to my younger cousin. At that time, I wasn't particular about brands, I just wanted a cell phone for gaming and social media.
As I grew older, my taste in cell phones improved. In 2020, I saved up enough money to get a new cell phone. At that time, iPhones were the talk of the town. Everyone wanted one. While some people claimed they were overhyped and didn't see the good thing about it, others hopped in. I joined the moving train and got an iPhone. I wouldn’t say I got one because of peer pressure . Yes, everyone wanted one because their friends had one, but I genuinely wanted an iPhone. At first, it was difficult to navigate. I was used to the regular android settings and interface, but after a couple of days, I got used to it, and fell in love with it.
I plan to buy a new phone, hopefully, before the year ends. If I was asked this question a year ago, I would definitely choose an iPhone without thinking twice. However, I have tasted the world of Samsung, I’m now in a dilemma between IPhone and Samsung. Which would you go for? Iphone and Samsung.
As someone who has been using an Iphone since 2020, naturally, my heart tilts towards Iphone, but deep down, there is something inside me that makes me want to try a new and upgraded Samsung. So, if I have to buy a new cell phone, it would either be an Iphone 12 pro max or Samsung s22 ultra. These phones are within my budget. However, if someone offered to buy me a phone regardless of the price, I would choose the latest Iphone; Iphone 16 or Samsung 24 ultra. My friend’s S24 is sleek and easy to handle.
