Lives On The Line

The lengths to which people, particularly parents, go to put food on the table is amusing and something worth honoring. They go the extra mile, taking dangerous jobs to earn money and provide the basic necessities for their children. Growing up, I'm sure some of these people with dangerous jobs wanted safer and professional jobs. They wanted to be medical doctors, engineers, nurses, pilots, among others. However, life has an interesting way of pulling its strings. Instead of their dream jobs, they find themselves doing dangerous jobs, struggling between earning money and surviving. Every day, hundreds of people around the world lose their lives in the course of their jobs. You might want to ask; if the jobs are so dangerous, why don’t they quit and find another? Well, it is not as easy as you think. Some of them are not left with such opportunities. Day 21 of the Inleo prompts asks us which jobs are the most dangerous ones.

Miners take the second spot (saving the best for the last) on my list of the world’s most dangerous jobs. Every day, miners leave their homes to go to the mining site. Some of them even build their tents around the site and live for extended periods without seeing their loved ones. Imagine digging deep into the earth or through rocks in an unstable condition. Sometimes, the tunnels collapse and heavy rocks fall on their heads, leading to their immediate death. Miners also make use of explosions. Some of the rocks are extremely strong and require explosives. Sometimes, explosives go out of hand, leading to the death of the miners. Miners may also suffer respiratory or lung diseases as a result of the toxic gasses. Mining can be traced to the colonial era. Colonial governments established mining industries in their colonies which were used to extract resources.

Moving on, construction workers also face high risks in their jobs. Have you ever looked at very tall buildings around you and wondered how they did it? “How did the workers manage to get that high?” Not to talk of skyscrapers; those buildings that almost touch the sky. Any slight mistake from the top is straight death. Sometime this year in my country, a multimillionaire died in a multiple story building. Apparently, the foundation of the building was not strong. So, that day, the man decided to visit his soon-to-be-completed project. Unfortunately, the building collapsed, leading to the death of him and many of the workers. These are some of the risks construction workers face. They are also exposed to harmful substances.

Next, firefighters. Firefighters are heroes without capes, risking their lives to save others. Before they get into the job, firefighters undergo training on how to perform their duties perfectly. However, sometimes this training does not prepare them for the dangers of unforeseen circumstances. Sometimes, things happen beyond their control and they are caught up in the house with fire. Going into a house that is on fire is very risky. The smoke can be choking and if they are lucky, they escape with severe burns and if they are not, they get burnt to death. This is a very dangerous job that deserves our respect.

Finally, the most dangerous jobs on my list are the military; those who go to war or get transferred to war zones. When these soldiers leave their homes, the probability that they will return is 50%. These are the people who sacrifice their lives for their countries. The worst thing that can happen to them when they go to war is death, but if they survive, they battle the psychological effects of war. Some of them even lose their sense of self. This year, I read a book about wars and soldiers. The title of the book is the King’s Rifle. On the outside, people respected the General for having won many wars. They picture him as a strong man who could tackle anything and everything. But deep down, the general is battling the psychological effects of war and he even attempts to commit suicide as a result of this. With this, it is evident that the military is one of the most dangerous jobs in the world.

This is my entry to the Inleo prompt for day 21. The topic is; what are the world’s most dangerous jobs?

Thanks for reading.
