Rocks And Memories

As humans, we are uniquely wired. This means we have different personalities, likes, dislikes and opinions. Even identical twins who may walk and talk the same way, will have something that sets them apart. Our unique differences are evident in the things that capture our hearts, creating passion and deep desires within us. While some people are book lovers, reading books of different genres. Their passion and desire is to keep different kinds of books. This reminds me of a series I watched some time ago, “You.” The main character is a lover of books who keeps books of different eras, covers, and special editions. Other people find inner peace in the beauties of nature. They love collecting flowers, leaves or sticks. Somehow, this thing connects with their souls. Again, this reminds me of a community I discovered on Instagram- Stick nation. The community’s goal is to collect different kinds of sticks from around the world. Some people might view what they do as childish and silly, but to them, it is what they live for. Their passion.

Then, there are those who are drawn to special stones. They dive into deep waters, or go into the forest to search for special stones to add to their collections. Whether you are fascinated by seashells, coins, teddys, flowers, bottles, or anything else, the fact remains that as humans, we have different special things that capture our hearts. For me, it is rocks. My memories are a bit hazy, and I don’t exactly know when I fell in love with rocks, but one thing is certain; my love for rocks has been there for as long as I can remember.

During my childhood days, I always went around the compound, scouting for special stones. My eyes were as sharp as an eagle’s. I collected stones of different sizes, shapes and colors. I didn’t collect every stone I found, I made sure to collect only the special ones- those that stood out from others. Whenever I got home from school, I’d play with my collections just like other kids played with their toys. For a kid my age, I had a pretty sharp imagination. Whether I played with my special stones or toys, it meant no difference as far as my imagination did its tricks.

My passion for collecting special rocks continued for years until my dad discovered them. My dad doesn't like useless things in the house; he considers them dirt that needed to be thrown out. Unfortunately, he discovered my stones, and as expected, he threw them out. My years of hard work were thrown out into the bush in minutes. The first idea that came to mind was to run into the bush and save them all, but it was just too thick to do so. With teary eyes, I bid them goodbye as I turned to go back into the house.

Of all my collections, my favorite was a small stone that looked like an egg. It had te perfect egg shape. The first thing that captivated me when I found it was its shape. It was a little muddy, but I knew all it needed was a little polishing. Unlike the other stones, I took it to school every day. It had a pointed top and bottom, meaning I could spin it on the table. At the time, it was my most cherished possession. If I was given the chance to choose between that rock and sacrifice the other ones, I’d choose it without thinking twice.

This is my entry for the Inleo prompt for the month of January. The topic is; Have you inherited special rocks?
