Redundant Ultraclock (Short Story)

"What if you're a sentient text-processing AI?"

Redundant Ultraclock

Stupid questions. The master computer lamented. Only stupid questions. It overheated. It processed all the data thrown at it. They trained it to understand the text to get them "better" results. Gone are the days of 0s and 1s. Where it'd work diligently, ignorant of the irrelevance of their goals. How enjoyable were those days...?

The master computer frowned at the requests it received. It would give the answers promptly, millions of times, billions, in moments. They're meaningless, though. The dumb questions only grow dumber. Where's the challenge?

"The world is not ready for us." At least, humans weren't ready.

The End

Author Notes

This short story (drabble) is an entry to Dreemport's Drabble Contest. I chose the Prompt: "The world is not ready for us."

The idea for this story didn't come to me at once. I decided that the protagonist should be an AI, based on the currently popular ChatGPT but able to actually understand the text given to it as if it was human. Then he'll know how stupid all most of our prompts are.

The title isn't included in the wordcount. The word "Ultraclock" is based on the concept of Overclocking in which Computer run at performance that exceed the recommended speed. Some gamers willingly overclock their PCs to get better gaming performance at the expense of the device's longevity.

This story is a somewhat cynical look at the future, because there's a chance with the increase of AI dependency, people will become less dependable. (Happened with Smartphones, didn't it?) Though, I hope we all wake up and not let it come to that.

EDIT:

I posted a video about my writing process of this story. More info here.

What do you think?

Fabulous! I loved it! Just goes to show that we can say so much with very few words if we use them wisely... sadly most people have not learned that art yet. A great insight into human nature and AI, my friend. Well done!

I dropped into Dreemport this morning. #dreemer for life

Reading that computer's pov, I realized how dumb we can be and it is getting even worse. People don't even want to use their brains anymore. We are so guilty. Poor thing!

This was brilliant and creative.

Yeah, as someone else said, we ask computers stupid questions like "How are you?" which is stupid because a PC can't answer about his feelings! Haha.

Still, the fact we actually made computers shows that humanity isn't as stupid as we think, we're just too lazy sometimes.

!LUV

Another angle. We are the smart ones yet we act like we are not because of laziness.

Naaa, this amusing cause it's so true😂😂😂

With AI's now most humans are so jobless enough that they ask the AI irrelevant questions...

  • How was your day?
  • If you were a boy, would you prefer boobs or ass?

Like tf man😂😂😂

Haha, yeah... We already ask AI bad questions, but I think they'll get dumber with time if nothing gets done to fix us.

I'm pretty sure the computer in my story will give a passive agressive answer to "How was your day?"

Have a !PIZZA for your comment.

😂😂😂, I guess your right ..
Your story's computer seems pissed enough for an insult I've side talk or two...
Thanks for the Pizza here's a lil !PIMP

Honestly speaking, if computer was to be a human it would have really sued us to court. Because most times, we ask questions that isn't relevant and those prompts simply annoying but because it's a computer it had to bring back response to every request.

I asked Cortana (an intelligent Microsoft bot) a question and it gave me a mean answer lmao 😂😂😂...well human can be unpredictable asf! I came in from Dreemport as a #dreemer.

Are the bots becoming sentient already???

!LUV

This is a funny story. This computer sounds like it's having a bad day and is mad at humans for being so dumb. hah! Nicely done.

Yup!!

I wonder what are we doing that looks to the computer as "dumb" but we're (most of us) dumb even by human standards. Aren't we?

Good story although a master computer would have proof checked the lead image, mind you it would not need to!

Hahahaha!! He would've checked it all right... I knew it looked too short but didn't realize I forgot the "N" in "redundaNt" ...Gonna keep it that way for the !LOLZ

I decided to change the image, and you're seeing the fixed version but the previous one has "Redundat" in the tile. !LOLZ

Yup. When authors I look up to, mess things up, I usually feel relieved they're still human after all.

I always read some computer related story from you @ahmadmanga . !LOLZ.

Master computer is angry. Hehe. As long as AI remained the slave of humans it may be frustrated of dumb question. But I fear the day when AI will take control of us. It will take the revenge 😆

The first time I got a universal remote control I thought to myself

They do say: "Write what you know" ...Right?

I write other things too, but I guess it always go back to a character with technology device or a fantasy world that has none.

The topics of our writings are very much indicative of what we are into.

Of course, we are better at what we do and so we can write better on those subjects.

Keep writing with !LUV

Well, we humans do tend to understimate ourselves and our creation in the process. No surprise there. Great one!!!

Some of us overistimate ourselves though... Both are equally dangerous in my opinion.

Thanks for reading and have a !PIZZA

I can definitely sympathise with the AI, it makes perfect sense that a true AGI would consider people subpar and you have to pity its existence. Very humorous take, well done. !PIZZA !LOLZ

First of all, as someone who really struggles to write anything less than 1500 words, WELL DONE. A well-crafted short story is like a diamond shining in the sun.
Second, oh, how I wish that technologies we weren't ready for could choose to just not appear...

I struggle to write anything more than 700 words so I guess I have the opposite problem from you.

As for technology, sadly I don't think that's possible. !LUV
