This week's Rumi Reflection:
Maybe you are searching among the branches, for what only appears in the roots.
-Rumi
Man that's a mouthful - an encapsulation of that 2-sided tree always associated with the famous Hermetic axiom, "As above, So below, As below, So above."
After reading this piece from Rumi, I was immediately brought to one of my personal favorite sayings - "roots over fruits". A reminder we are often solely consumed with the external bearings of the seed, shunning the unseen growth that takes place in the soil. The capacity to bear fruit is only possible because of the strenuous work of the roots, reminding us that fruition occurs first and the realm of the unseen, the "causal" realm.
The flesh that flourishes on the branch is but a mere reflection of how nourishing the root's environment is. This environment gives the branches their capacity to bear fruit. The law of correspondence is heavy at play here.
Examining this relationship can shed light on the common misinterpretation of what many Mystic schools of thought referred to as "the false physical reality." It's not that our physical reality is fake per se, rather it is rather an effect of the causal "mental" and "spiritual" planes. It only exist because of those planes, and therefore can't be separate from them in any circumstance. Along with that separation, we must also recognize its inferiority.
Let's look at how the components in this example correspond to these planes of existence:
- branches/fruit > physical plane
- soil/roots > mental plane
- unseen electric (+) and magnetic (-) forces > spiritual plane
From this vantage point, we can observe an "existential hierarchy" that directs us toward true understanding. Rarely in life do we find the answers to what we're searching for on the surface.
