“Ah, the psych-”

Marina punched Belphegor in the face. He fell back a little. “That’s for trying to kill my boys.”

Belphegor looked back at her. “Oh come on, we’ve never even met face to face.” He wiped his nose, which was bleeding a little. “Damn, you are surprisingly strong.”

I furrowed my eyebrows. “A punch can hurt you?” He gave me a look. “You think being on earth makes me stronger? Being around humans, some say that being on earth too long makes a demon more human. Well, that and being in love, but I don’t think that’s the problem.”

He wiped his nose again. “Can I come in?” Marina sighed and opened the door. “As long as you don’t try to kill my boys again.”

Belphegor came in first. “And, what if I tried to kill you,” he asked, spinning around. Marina smiled. “Well that wouldn’t be my problem anymore, but they might kill you.” She patted his shoulder and moved inside so me and Logan could come in.

I closed the door. “Marina, is it okay if Belphegor stays here while we deal with Vitan and Asmodeus?” She smiled. “Of course David, anything I can do to help.”

Belphegor looked around. “This is where you people stay when not fighting things?” Marina gave him a look and he put his hands up. “It’s very nice,” he said.

“So,” Logan said, sitting down. “Belphegor, any idea where Vitan would be? We’re not bringing him here.” Belphegor thought for a moment. “Yeah actually. He always was a big drinker, even in Hell. Where’s the closest bar to here?” Belphegor looked at me, expecting an answer. I shook my head. “I don’t drink.” Belphegor raised an eyebrow. “Huh, I didn’t expect that.”

Logan sat up. “Luxury. It’s about 3 blocks down from here,” he said. He then turned to me. “We should go now. It’s just past rush hour, nobody will be there except the demon.” I looked over at Marina, as if asking permission.

She nodded. “Go. We can’t wait around for him to find us here.” I glanced at Belphegor. “If you’re trying to play us-”

Belphegor put his hands up. “No funny business, I promise.” He put on an innocent expression, which made me believe him even less, but we didn’t have time to think about this. We usually only got one shot at killing these things. I mean, look what happened with Belphegor. I took out my gun. “Marina, do we have-”

She handed me a small black box. “Bullets dipped in holy water. I made them as soon as you two told me about what happened in Hell.” I smiled and took the box. “Thank you,” I said. She waved me off like it was nothing, which I guess it wasn’t to her.

I then looked at Logan. He took out his knife and a bottle of what looked like water. He smirked. “Let’s go kick some demon ass.”

Belphegor’s POV

I felt like I had been put in time out, left alone with the psychic in a house I had never seen before. I sat on the couch and looked around. Supernatural books were everywhere. I flipped one open and laughed at the first page. “This isn’t accurate,” I said as the psychic came over. “Demons are equal in power to angels. Where would the balance be if good could wipe out evil without even trying? Let alone why they wouldn’t have done so already, seeing as I’m very much alive.”

The psychic handed me a cup of tea and sat down next to me. Why was she so close to me? Why did she get me green tea? She looked at me. “So angels are real,” she said for clarification.

I nodded slowly. “Yeah. How do you think demons came around?” She took a sip of her own tea. “So demons are fallen angels.” I nodded again. “Most of them, yeah. I am. Which is only more proof that we are equal in power because why would we lose power when we fell?”

Marina looked at the book. “Do you regret falling? Becoming a demon?” I took a sip of the tea to think before answering. It was good, a little bitter, but I liked it.

“No,” I said, just as bitter as the tea. “Heaven was a mess, the angels were a mess. They didn’t want to listen to me, that’s their fault. I never wanted to fall, but if they refused to change then what’s the point in trying to make them?”

Marina put her tea down. “Didn’t you have friends up there?” I tensed up, the tea inches from my mouth. “I-I…I don’t like thinking about that. It was a long time ago. And…and I think he hates me now anyway.”

I put the tea down and turned away. I hated thinking of those memories. Back when I had truly been happy. That was over now though, had been for centuries.

I felt a hand on mine and looked over. Marina looked me straight in the eyes. “I understand feeling alone, believe me. Growing up, I was the outcast of the family, the black sheep as some say.”

“Because of your psychic abilities?” She shook her head. “My whole family was psychic. The problem was I was more powerful than them all. They thought I was strange, and my siblings, well I used to think they were jealous but in reality they might’ve been scared. So I left as soon as I could. I think you did the same. A young man thought of as different running away from his problems.”

I pulled away from her and crossed my arms. “I’m not running. I didn’t run. I just…” I had no answer.

Marina gave a sympathetic smile. “I know. Believe me, I know. But maybe it’s time for us all to stop running. I did.” She motioned around at the house, pictures of her and the idiot detectives on the walls and framed on the shelves. Just from this room I could tell she loved them. They were her children, the family she had made all by herself. She didn’t need her biological one, the people who thought she was crazy. She had Logan and David, and that was enough for her.

“I-I don’t know how,” I admitted. “I don’t think I can do what you did.”

Marina shook her head. “Of course you can. Anyone can. You just need to try.” Those words twirled around my head. Try. I could do that, couldn’t I?

I stood. “Maybe you’re right,” I said. Marina smirked. “Oh, I usually am. I can see into people you know. Though I will admit you’re more difficult.”

“Oh really,” I asked. “What do you see?”

Marina smiled. “The person you used to be, and the person you want to be again.”

David’s POV

Belphegor was right. Vitan was here. But that wasn’t all, because that would be too easy.

“I knew you two would find me. Though I did think you’d find me sooner, being how ‘competent’ Belphegor says you are.”

I clicked the safety off my gun. “Well then let’s get this over with.”

Vitan turned around from his spot at the bar. Other people were there, but none seemed to really care that I had a gun and Logan had a knife. Or the fact there was a man with fully black glowing eyes.

Vitan smiled. “Alright then.” He stood up and so did everyone else at the bar. I noticed the black eyes. Me and Logan glanced over at each other. “Really, everyone,” Logan exclaimed, exasperated. He raised his knife. “Fine. We can handle this, right David?”

No, I thought.

“Sure.”

Vitan didn’t move as the other demons attacked us. One swung at me, but I shot it in the chest before it could hit me. I saw Logan stab another one out of the corner of my eye. I continued shooting at them, but I wasn’t a perfect shot. One demon had a gun as well and tried to shoot me. He missed, but another one was able to stab me in the arm.

I fell back a little, and Logan noticed. He pushed me a little back and stabbed the demon who had done the same to me. We were surrounded, demons in every direction. I could shoot, but I needed at least one bullet to kill Vitan, and I was running low already. Logan was still fighting to the best of his ability, but all he had was a knife (which I told him was stupid earlier but he didn’t listen to me).

I shot another demon. I had one bullet left. One bullet. Logan was running low on stamina, and I thought for a moment this was how I was going to die. A bunch of demons in a place I hadn’t ever wanted to go in. And what would the public say about it? Probably that we were some stupid drunks who got into a bar fight.

“Vitan, do you really need even lower demons doing your dirty work?”

Everyone stopped and looked at the open door. Belphegor. I cursed. Why was he here? Did he not understand the whole point of us leaving him with Marina? Was he that stupid?

Vitan stood up, scowling. “Belphegor. Come to surrender?” The deadly sin laughed. “Oh please. It’s like you don’t know me at all.” His eyes glowed light blue and he smiled.

Belphegor raised his hands and we were no longer in the bar. It looked like we were back in Hell, in Asmodeus’ castle. The sky twirled as if there would be a storm, and I wondered if it rained here it would rain acid or fire.

Vitan growled and took out his cane. I suddenly noticed how sharp the end of it was as he swung at Belphegor. However, the deadly sin dodged, barely trying. “Come on, you’re so close! Try again!”

The other demons came back to their senses and tried to attack us again, but there were only 2 of them, and Logan was able to stab both of them before they could try anything. We both looked over at Belphegor and Vitan, who were still fighting. Belphegor was hit in the face by the cane. It seemed to hurt him. Vitan smiled.

“You really have gone soft, haven’t you,” he teased, eyes flaring with anger. Belphegor raised his hands and the ground he was standing on rose out of Vitan’s reach. The bounty hunter rolled his eyes. “Fine, be that way.” He disappeared and I thought it was over.

Until I heard a small sound from Logan.

I turned and saw Vitan, his cane wrapped around Logan so he couldn’t move. Vitan looked at Belphegor. “Surrender or he dies.”

I raised my gun at Vitan, but I couldn’t get a clear shot, and I refused to shoot Logan. The demon smiled at me. “Can’t pull the trigger, can you?” Logan fought, but was unable to get away. He looked like he had gone crazy, hair everywhere and eyes wide. He turned back to Belphegor, who was watching from his perch. “What’ll it be, Belphie?”

Belphegor came back down. “Fine. Take me.”

I stepped in front of Belphegor. “Wait, what,” I asked, putting my hand on his chest. “What do you think you’re doing?”

Belphegor grabbed my wrist and pulled me off him, way gentler than I thought him possible. “I’m surrendering, to protect your little friend.”

He tried to get past me again but I stopped him. “You’re just going back? After all this? After hiding for so long?” He shrugged. “No more running, right?”

Vitan let Logan go, who fell to his knees. I went to his side, seeing if he was okay. Belphegor went over to Vitan’s side. “You’re making a mistake,” I told him.

Belphegor shrugged. “Maybe.” He came over to me, patting me on the shoulder. “Thank you anyway, trying to help the guy who tried to kill you.” Then Vitan grabbed him and they both disappeared.

We were no longer in Hell, and that’s when I realized we never really had been. It was an illusion, Belphegor’s favorite little trick.

I went back to helping Logan up.

Belphegor’s POV

“So rough, no need for that,” I said as Vitan pushed me towards the real throne. Asmodeus was there, and I subconsciously moved away as much as I could without moving.

“Why hello brother,” Asmodeus said. “Long time no see.” I shook my head. “Last time we saw each other you did try to have me tortured, so I hadn’t really been thinking about it.”

Asmodeus got down and came up to me. He grabbed my jacket and pulled me closer. “You really are insufferable, you know that?” He threw me to the ground, which hurt more than it should’ve.

I sat up. “Yeah, I am.” Asmodeus smirked. “You always were a failure, Belphie. It’s disappointing really. Someone with your power, your potential, you could’ve been as powerful as…well, not me exactly, but probably Leviathan. Instead you chose to be weak.”

I stood up. “You’re right about one thing Mo,” I said. “I am a failure. But I’m not dying as one.”

I reached into my jacket and pulled out the gun I had stolen from David. Asmodeus raised an eyebrow. “You know that won’t hurt me.”

I smirked. “I know.” Then I shot Vitan square in the chest. “See you around, brother.”

Then I was running.

David’s POV

“So he just surrendered himself,” Marina asked once we finished our story. I nodded. “Yeah, he did.”

Logan put the frozen vegetables back to his head. He had a lump. “I still don’t get it. Why would he sacrifice himself for me?

“I don’t know,” I admitted. “But at least you’re okay.” Logan smiled. “Right back at ya, sherlock.”

There was a knock on the door, and I got up to get it. “Hell-”

“Precisely,” Belphegor said, leaning against the door with a smile.

“Belphegor? How did you-what happened,” I asked. He pushed his way inside. “Long story. Vitan took me to Asmodeus, I shot Vitan, thanks for the gun by the way,” he said, handing it back to me. “And then I asked that dealer demon I told you about to bring me back here. Apparently I owe him now, though he holds his cards way too close to his chest for me to know what he wants from me. Future problem I guess.”

Logan threw the frozen vegetables at Belphegor. It hit him in the chest. “Ow,” he said, though it didn’t seem to really hurt.

Logan shrugged. “Had to make sure it wasn’t an illusion. My head still hurts from that.”

Belphegor shrugged. “Or maybe it’s that lump on your head.” That earned him a glare.

“Anyway,” Belphegor continued. “I’m keeping my part of the deal. You kept your part after all. Hopefully that means we won’t see each other ever again.”

“Yeah, hope so,” Logan muttered.

I looked at the demon. “That would probably be best for all of us.” Belphegor smiled and looked at the door. “I should be going then.” I nodded. “I’ll walk you out.”

Belphegor stopped outside the door. “David…thank you for trying to help me. I don’t really get why you did, but thank you all the same.”

I shrugged. “Because that brother of yours is even more of a jerk than you. I’d rather work with a thief than a murderer.”

“But I am a murderer.”

“It’s…figure of speech,” I explained.

Belphegor smirked. “I put my number in your phone by the way. If you need anything from little old me, call. Though for your sake I hope not. See you around.” Then he was gone.

I closed the door and Logan came over to me. “Are you sure letting him go is a good idea,” he asked. I shrugged. “Probably not. But if he does anything, we’ll just kill him. We did it before. For now, we’ll give him a chance to not be a monster.”

Logan stood up fully. “Give him a chance to be better than his species.” He smiled.

“I can work with that.”

So, we've met some more demons. Will we see more? Will Belphegor come back? Well, I guess we'll see! Have a good day, hope you enjoyed!
