Negative effects of sleep disorders in children/Efectos negativos de los trastornos del sueño en los niños [Eng/Eng]

Hello my friends parents and Home Edders education agents, today I want to talk to you about a subject that sometimes we do not pay enough attention to because we do not consider it serious until its consequences are really severe and affect the entire neural and biological functioning of the body of our children, and that is the sleep disorders.

In many occasions as parents we think that if our child sleeps a lot he is sick or if he sleeps little it is because he has a lot of energy that he needs to use, however there is a problem that is associated to not having an adequate sleep rhythm. In this sense, depending on the age of our little ones, there is a number of hours that their brain and body needs to complete the process of neuronal recovery and complete the growth cycle, this amount has been estimated by neurologists.

The hours of sleep recommended by neurologists and specialists in the matter are the following:

As you can see there is a recommendation of the amount of hours our children should sleep to make the most of not only their growth but also their neuronal recovery. The benefits of sleep are on a large scale ranging from a healthy development and strengthening of brain functions, through optimal growth to a proper psychological balance.

But what happens when our children do not sleep the necessary hours, when they have micro naps throughout the day or there is an imbalance in the schedules for rest, for example, how many have not happened to them that in this pandemic their children sleep more during the day and less at night because being without a usual rhythm of typical things they do not care whether it is day or night, but that is where the problems come, because the restorative sleep is at night. Among the serious consequences of a disturbance in the sleep cycle are the following:

Lack of organization, concentration and memory: When our children face altered sleep cycles their organization is affected, they may begin to easily lose their personal belongings because they cannot remember where they put them, they are unable to focus on the execution of an activity or task or they may have difficulty in activities that were previously very easy for them.

Continuous tiredness: Children who face altered sleep cycles are constantly tired, they may even begin to have micro dreams or sleep apnea which is a serious disorder where breathing stops for a few seconds and starts again, this usually occurs in obese people (especially in adults, but there are studies in children from 9 to 12 years), in this sense, children are very tired throughout the day to the point of falling asleep even doing an activity such as eating.

Irritability and misbehavior: A child who does not sleep is a child who begins to have a bad mood because his neurons do not rest and see an exhausting workload. In this sense, studies by the academy of pediatrics have shown that children with hyperactivity and behavioral disorders are related to daytime hypersomnia, that is, they show daytime sleepiness and, not being able to express their discomfort, they begin to get stressed, irritable, upset about everything and have bad behavior because they do not know how to deal with the problem, if we as adults are affected by wanting to sleep and not being able to do it, imagine them.

Decreases their cognitive ability: A child who does not have an adequate sleep rhythm over demands to his brain a performance that it is not willing to give this results in some of its capabilities especially cognitive or related to learning diminish by attending to others in which usually with proper rest would not have to worry about.

Isolation and frequent crying: Children with sleep disorders tend to isolate themselves from people trying to find their center or place of peace, in many occasions depending on their age they will seek the support of the person to whom they are more attached either dad or mom to try to make their brain generate the correct impulses for rest, the smallest ones will cry constantly for not being able to express themselves in any other way.

My dear friends our children at any time of their lives can go through these problems caused by the alteration of the sleep cycle, what we must be alert that if any of these manifestations is present in our little ones or young people we make a review of their sleep cycle to find the root of the problem and its solution.

I am very grateful for your support and for taking me into account.

I once have a friend that once said "I am easily get irritated when I am sleep deprived because I have sleep disorders". And I agree with you on what you said about sleep disorders. I also picked important piece of information that I can apply with my toddler, thank you.

I think that one of the important things is to realize that something is happening to our children when they begin to have changes in their mood and behavior, something that is not usual in them because in many occasions sleep disorders go unnoticed. Thank you for reading and sharing your experience

You're welcome. Thank you also. I learned valuable lesson from your post.

How timely. Just the other day, I out my son to bed half an hour early because he had been showing irritability and a short temper for the past three days. It finally clicked that he had been crawling into bed with me and laying there awake until I was ready to start the day. I explained that he wasn't I troubled that I just recognized he needed more rest. He went to bed agreeably (shockingly), fell asleep with ease, and was much more even tempered the next day. Even I am irritable without proper rest so it only makes sense for our kids too. Great read. -Aimee

Hello friend, thank you for reading and sharing your experience, I must tell you that my son is already 19 years old but when he was 6 years old and started primary school I don't know if it was because of the stress of the new school and friends he started to stop sleeping, I didn't realize it until I noticed that he started to fall asleep when we were having lunch or they called me from school to tell me that he was falling asleep in class, His mood changed and he was upset all the time, so when I noticed that he went to his room but didn't fall asleep, of course I was exhausted and I trusted that he was too until I started to keep an eye on him and from that moment on I started to make sure he was able to get back to sleep again, I even had to sleep with him for several weeks until he was able to get back to his rhythm.

Wow, sounds like starting school was quite an adjustment for him. My kids seem to have endless energy, trying to postpone bedtime regularly. I hope they're learning to trust me when I explain how beneficial rest is for their growing bodies. You sound like such a caring and observant mom! How wonderful that you were able to help him reset his rhythm to get him the rest he needed. -Aimee

By the way, I really like your posts. They are well done and you speak from experience, that's great.

Thank you! I enjoy writing from experience and sharing things I have learned. I've picked up so much from other moms and feel like it would be a shame not to keep passing the information along. The proverbial village seems to have moved online. :) -Aimee

This information is really important. Sleep disorders often have serious health consequences no matter how old you are. Thank you for sharing

Yes, it is really valuable information because sometimes we forget some details that are not so easy to evidence. Thanks for reading and commenting
