I feel like most days you can create an 'excursion day' even if your not going out. I've yet to homeschool older children, as mine are all still young, but even if we have the 'stay at home' days, pretend play is great for creating that excursion feeling! Not sure how older kids would react to this, but younger children often seem to really love and live it as if it were real. We often pretend cafe or restaurant, to start with the kids write out a menu, this usually involves going through the fridge and cupboards to find out what we have in stock to create a workable food and drinks menu. After they've written the menu they set out the tables, the fun part then begins. They take it in turns to come up to the waitress (aka, me) and order their food. We often include the prices and they pay with real money. This is one example of having an excursions when a real excursion out isn't possible. However when travelling, every day feels like an outing! A trip to Thompson Springs near Kununurra West Australia, was the perfect place to go on a 42 degree day. Honestly having 4 kids in a small caravan, on a 42+ degrees day and that's in the shade, is never going to work when it comes to doing traditional school. So it's always best to set out in search of water and incorporate learning into fun.
A friendly goanna came for a cool down in the springs also. The kids enjoyed watching him swim so proficiently. They threw in some blueberries and were amazed at how fast and deep the goanna dived into the water for them. An awesome learning experience right there.
Ah I will cherish these gorgeous simple assignments. I'm so thankful for digital photos, paper copies don't last that long in our house but at least I'll have photos to remember them by.
Pretend play is always a winner. No need to be afraid you'll fail with. Me speaking here. My son loves pretend play and its funny because Before turning 3...around that age, he didnt play like these, role play and pretend play. And I thought there's something wrong with him because most of the kids do this pretend play very early. He didnt. And I think I know why, and that could have been because he always was on logical and Math related games. He has a logical thinking, rather than creative one.
But now things have changed. He LOVES to play this way, having multiple roles like a doctor or going to shopping, making food, driver etc etc.
So as I already know this, kids are different and develop different.
Anyways, it seems like you guys had an amazing time.
The drawing and the writing are the cutest! I keep these too! They are priceless! memories for ever and for the heart!
So true, every child is so different in the way they learn, play anddevelop.
These were amazing photos! I wanna be there like right now; I'm so jealous of you and yours right now. 😅 And yes, I also would like to support your candidacy for President of the World. This Daily Excursion Agenda sounds like a no brainer to me! 😁
Hehe thankyou! We are very spoilt to experience such amazing places. It's a pretty amazing area, there are many different Springs and all are so unique. Look forward to sharing the other places soon.
If they are as wonderful as this - I look forward to seeing (and drooling over) them as well. 🙂
This and better🥰 there is never a dull moment, it's breathtaking beauty.
Hi @travellingcogs, beautiful pictures, I imagine the kids had a lot of fun at the spring, definitely nature gives us amazing moments like appreciating a goanna and offering it some food, thanks for sharing your education adventure.
Greetings!
Thank you, and yes I was actually surprised how long they sat still and watched the goanna for, it's not often they sit still for long, but when it comes to something that interests them and they perceive as fun to watch time doesn't bother them.
