When we run our weekly missions with the Liotes project, I often get inspired by the answers that I get from our community. This week we have asked them why hive is special and the answers that we have recieved were pretty interesting. Some answers were quite expected but others were quite suprising...
The easiest way to earn with social media
I had once a monetized youtube channel and it was in the very early days. I managed to earn some money until the day that they kicked me out. Nowadays, it's pretty tough to get monetized with traditional social media. Either you need to have tons of followers or you have to build a whole business structure behind your channel with products or affiliate offers. With Hive you have the option to earn within 7 days of your first post. You earn maybe not that much but the barrier of entry is quite low.
Maybe this is also the reason why there are quite a lot of people who try to game the system but we have a solution...
Downvotes make hive special
I was very surprised when @incublus mentioned that. As a moderator for the Turkish community, I can totally understand why he thinks like that. Each one of us has the tool to avoid abuse. We don't rely on a centralised entity to control the activity of all the users. Even if I am not a big fan of downvotes, it's probably true that their existence is very important for hive to avoid being exploited by people who are ill intentioned.
We can participate in shaping the future of the blockchain
Hive offers each of us the power to participate in shaping the future on the blockchain. @shiftrox is quite right that everyone has something to contribute in how we evolve as a chain. We are part of the history. We define with our votes how the reward pool is distributed. We define how much stake we want to have and how much we want our voice to count. We can vote on proposals and chose the witnesses we want. We also have the option just to write our ideas down in the form of posts or comments and shape the ideas of others. Our voice on Hive matters!
The Swiss army knife for online activity
On hive you can do pretty much everything that you want. You can read stuff, you can write stuff in long form or short form. You can publish videos. You can post photos. You can interact with others. You have drama. You can play games. You can share your experiences. You can learn from others. You can build your project. You can trade and you can make money. There is something for everybody and each of us can define his own role on hive. You will find a community of similar minded people and since most of the communities are small, you will be quickly adopted if you behave accordingly.
Hive brings out the human sides in us
If you spend some time on platforms like facebook or tiktok, you undoubtedly will be run over hatred and polarisation. Of course we have some of that on hive as well but compared to these platforms, it's a very different experience. In spite of being the online home of people from all over the world, we tend to be respectful with each other. On hive positive behaviour is rewarded. With our upvotes we give value to others and at the same time we generate curation rewards for us. We can thank people for their time when they read and comment on our posts by giving them upvotes or using tools like commentrewarder. On hive you are happy if your friends are successful because this means that their hive power will grow and their upvotes will be worth more. Building links with as many people as possible is positive because you increase your influence on the chain and you bring value to others and at the same time this value comes back to you.
After spending some days being confronted with my tiktok algorithm that has decided that American politics is my centre of interest, it's so refreshing to be on hive and to have people that actually care about others...
Hive is far from being perfect but we sometimes forget how great it is
On hive nobody can forbid you from posting and nobody can take away your account. Of course it's possible that some people get downvoted for a reason or another but they can still post and they don't lose their accounts. Hive is probably one of the few places where there is real freedom of speech and where in spite of that people try to engage with each other in a respectful way. I believe that this is worth much more than the rewards that we get. There are definitely some problems that need to be tackled on hive but in general we have it quite nice here....
Do you agree with that?

I love Hive but.....
I hate the downvote part of Hive the reason being it is already being used as a weapon against people for no reason other than hate or pettiness.
Being able to financially attack and ruin people is a power most people should not have regardless of their so called reasoning.
I have seen innocent people taking a journey on Hive, be attacked not just by one person that doesn't like the content, no they do it alongside groups using a tool like hive.vote to create downvote trails.
I think dislike is better than being able to financially attack people, honestly most people in the world should not have this ability they ain't ready.
It is naive to think people would not abuse this type of feature.
Interesting all the same @achim03

I think that you have both sides of the medal. People abusing the reward pool and others abusing the downvotes. I'm not a big fan of downvotes and I probably have never used them on hive. I think however that it's good that they exist. On the other hand I also agree that some people abuse their power using downvotes as a bulling method. I'm not against using a downvote on a post that uses AI or is plagiarisme but then I als believe that everybody deserves a second chance and I'm against auto downvoting on people who once made a mistake...
Hive is better than other social media because now it takes a lot of effort to get monetized on YouTube and Facebook and most people can't do it. In this respect, Hive is much better. Hive should have its own messenger app where people can get rewards for talking. Then Hive will be at the top of social media.
We have quite a lot already with video, long form and short form :-)
That's the most incredible thing of all, it's even the slogan I created:
There is a Hive of possibilities
And that's it, we can be part of history, decide the future of the network, monetize long or short content, invest in L2, having a high HP, games, it's a lot and all of this makes Hive a special and unprecedented place!
I was very happy for the mention, thank you and a big hug.
The fact that we can do so many things on hive makes it a real online home for most of us :-)
For sure, having so many options is super beneficial for all of us, we just need to encourage more people to come to the hive! They need to get out of the matrix xD
You described some good points!
I think the low entry barrier and the possibility to earn after seven days is great. That’s one reason why I decided to blog more on Hive.
The monetization is really available to everybody and then it's up to us to make the best out of it :-)
You have put together some compelling arguments in favor of those choosing to interact on the Hive blockchain, @achim03. I find that to be common.
What is less common? Even actively resisted?
Compelling arguments challenging what might be charitably referred to as continuous improvement. Those conversations cannot even get properly started, without freedom to have an honest discussion about the challenges faced by those interacting on the Hive blockchain.
Whatever is deemed best to facilitate a full range of discussion about both the merits and challenges will always have my support. As a newbie, I do not mind saying most of what I read along these lines has the far too common feel of what I have experienced over time in the broader crypto world.
Which is what?
Anything which promotes buying more is encouraged. Which takes form in ways which I will not go into depth here in this comment, but will simply state too often it does not seem to be honestly examined. Almost anything goes. And is excused.
Anything which MIGHT promote selling is discouraged. Again, which takes form in ways which I will not get into here. Very little, if any, is tolerated.
In whatever way you, as a Witness, work to facilitate a healthy balance of both will always have my support. As interacting on the Hive blockchain will then much more closely start to resemble what we experience in the real world.
I think that you are not wrong to point out that the business side on hive is not very developped. I was part of the CTP community that was very dynamic a couple of years back and the main idea was to build businesses on hive. When you speak about businesses, then selling becomes an important part of it. If we had a bit more business attitude here on hive, it would probably be better for the blockchain in general. Businesses bring customers, ideas, users and new ways of using the blockchain that should be encouraged.
Yes, agreed, @achim03. What that mindset also brings is a very deliberate thought process which some refer to as some version of being a "devil's advocate."
The point of these exercises is very simple. If you are trying to convince someone to invest in whatever your great idea is, you better be prepared to defend it against any objections. Even any potential objections!
If you cannot do that? Why not? What are you trying to hide?
The comment about downvotes is interesting. I barely ever used the downvote option myself, and by that, I mean less than 10 times in total in the nearly 3 years I've been here! But, the reasons you made do make sense. It is a tool that allows the community to self police and root out undesirable activity.
I haven't used downvotes either but I believe it's not bad that they exist just to keep people in line and not abuse the reward pool. However there is also the danger in abusing the power of downvotes...
That's a great summary of the feedback from the Liotes mission. I especially like your recognition of the Human scale of Hive. Because, in these days of centralised platforms and Artificial Intelligence, it is extremely valuable to enjoy the human interaction that is such a strong part of the Hive experience.
I might suggest that it's the
But I'm not particularly happy with that acronym. However, it might be something for a future mission.

That's an interesting idea :-)
Man, I realized how necessary downvote is because every day I see another scammer on Hive. People are constantly trying to scam, have AI write posts or share the same posts over and over again. We need to prevent that! 💪
I think that using downvotes to prevent scams is really necessary. For most of us it's enough to know that there are downvotes to behave :-)

I have to think part of the lack of polarization here is because of the relative difficulty of getting an account. Usually that's a bad thing and we complain that by failing the grandma test in ease of signing up for an account we limit growth, but there is a good side, eh? That relative difficulty also prevents all the Russian hate-spewing bots that Twitter and Facebook have been overrun by.
So... win? Kind of sort of?
Though I would love to see more explosive growth, we do kind of have a good thing going with everyone somewhat familiar with everyone else and all fairly nice to each other.

Maybe it's good that hive is not that popular yet and we can communicate without too much hattered with each other. I think there is some space for more people but maybe we don't really need all the troll farms on web 2.0 :-)
