Liking the collapsed reply from bots

in #hive2 months ago

News flash: Hive has bots that reply to messages. Since I run a couple (LUV & HBIT), and because I like Hive and want its usefulness to remain, I worry about bots being a nuisance. Mainly, I don't want bots to...

  1. interfere with or hinder real conversations - like the annoying person who always interjects random asides to hinder a conversation
  2. become visual eyesores - like giant billboards littering a beautiful country drive

To those ends, I've tried to whittle down the LUV reply. It's currently at two lines. The image below shows how it looks on hive.blog right now:

Also, I've reminded people several times that you can always mute accounts like @luvshares if you don't wish to see these types of replies.

Recently, I've noticed that PeakD and ecency have gone to the next step...collapsing or minimizing bot replies. I actually like this because it does the following:

  • it keeps the reply there in place
  • even though the "reply" is now small, it still conveys the message: "you got LUV"
  • it puts the "power" in the hands of the recipient...they can look at it if they wish, or not
  • the info and links inside the reply are still there, and can be viewed if desired
  • it cuts way back on verbal interference (that annoying person who interjects things)
  • it considerably cuts down on visual interference (those country road billboards)

Below is the collapsed view on PeakD:

And here is the ultra-collapsed view on Ecency:

I think I actually like the Ecency version best due to its pure minimalism.

Most people here on Hive are familiar with these types of "tipping bots." When an experienced Hivers sees a reply from one of these bots, they know what's going on and there really is no need for much of a reply message. Thus, the minimized reply is fine.

I will say, the bot total on Hive grows over time. Here's a list (not sure if all are still active) and there are others. As bots emerge, their replies seem to be non-collapsed (until they are). Here's an uncollapsed bot reply that I received recently:

Maybe the only downside is that newcomers to Hive may have no clue what is going on with a collapsed bot reply. Specifically, with LUV, the goal is for Hiver A to send LUV (a bit of love) to Hiver B. Without the message "Hiver B sent you LUV" explicitly shown, a newcomer likely will simply miss this fact. But, that's okay by me. If they stick around on Hive, they'll figure it out in time and then it will be a pleasant surprise.

I agree with you about bots not interfering with the visual experience. In fact, with @ecency solution I constantly need to remind myself that the bot’s reply is actually there 😂
