Is Upbit Becoming A Weak Point For Hive?

75M HIVE In One Wallet!

  • 20% of the total supply
  • 34% of the liquid supply
  • 48% of the liquid supply excluding the HIVE in the DHF
  • 60% of all HIVE on exchanges

Hope they have really good security!

Sort:

Yes, I think it is weak point in many ways.

  1. Risk of hack
    a. Price dump due to masses of Hive sold
    b. Governance impacted by large powerup by hacker
  2. Nature of UpBit speculators
    a. They have little or no interest in the actual Hive project, they bring capital to the network but they also will extract that capital quickly with a change of sentiment
    b. We have seen that most of the Korean community is not likely to defend the network in a governance attack, and indeed in the last one many of them sided with the attacker.

Point 1 could be mitigated if UpBit used the savings feature - they don't.
Point 2 is unlikely to change without the liquid Hive being stripped from UpBit (which happened temporarily due to HBD being overpriced and the conversion mechanism).

What's crazy is they are missing out on $444,000 in APR from HBD lol

That aside an exchange wont ever really stake hive. It locks it up for 13 weeks something they can't afford to do in order to have the liquidity to exchange. That being said however there are still far too few accounts with the overall staking amount of hive. Which is why each and everyone of you and myself should be staking hive and voting for some of the lower end posts of people who are active here on hive. It feels like everyone still piles on the same set of posts because it earns more in curation. Something wrong with that?

when I was powered up more I voted crap posts from people who at least tried. I felt like it was very important to do so. I will prob power pack up if the price goes any lower. Not sure why I have been liquid but it just felt right at the time.

Liquid makes sense if you want to move things around a 13 week staking period is very long to lock up tokens but I understand why Hive does it from a security perspective.

75Mio Hive in one wallet - this is really insane!

I don't like the fact that Koreans manipulate the price of it as they will.

I don't like it either

Well, we do have the protection of powered up Hive becoming able to participate in governance after one month. Or do you still see it as a threat?

Yes we do, but still this is a lot of stake in one place .... risk of hacks etc ...

Agree it's still a risk

most of those hives belongs to traders and not the exchange, am sure they learnt their lesson from the last time an exchange powers up its users coins, it will ruin their reputation

It would be great if accounts could self select into a two step authentication mechanism. I am sure exchange accounts would love the extra security as would the community and those with funds there.

Why does hivebuzz.me show @freedom as the largest holder of Hive?

Because you're sorting by HP not Hive.

Edit: Although it seems like sorting by Hive is currently broken.

Edit2: Looks like it worked when I used Chrome instead of Brave

Duh. Trying again:

I wonder how they could as Hive is not supported by Hardware wallets, or is it...?

You can manually add a hive account to ledger at the moment but it is still a bit technical. Hopefully a proper ledger app will get out soon.

I found this post talking about it if you are interested: https://peakd.com/hive-139531/@engrave/how-to-use-your-ledger-device-with-hive-ledger-cli

I have a working prototype with basic features. Will publish a public beta soon :)

Looking forward to using the actual app, amazing work!

This topic should be number 1 pinned post instead the nth "new tribe token/random project that is a paradigm shift in the cryptocurrency space/etc" pump post...

Not sure if feasible, but definitely 20 different 1000 HP users should be able to have more weight vote than a single 25,000 HP entity. At least that's how governance should be. Understanding that they can respond with puppet accounts, etc etc. But even so, as eventually the "proof of brain/humanness" should work somehow.

I agree with the first paragraph

What's the difference if you can create 20 accounts within a minute?

A feasible "proof of brain" can be implemented until the cost in time and engagement would invalidate most of the attempts of manipulation. Security always is enforced by rising the effort and lowering the rewards.

I don't make use of the them, to prevent hacking

Damn that's a big issue if they sell it's 20% let's hope for best

I want to be naive and say that's customer's funds and there is little risk of another hustle takeover. I think the issue here would be price manipulation. It's a dicey topic to be honest. On one hand we see the Koreans buying heavily into hive but we know their stance on governance

I have no idea how you found that! How could one account amass so much Hive? More to the point, don't you find it frightening, the thought that it could just het dumped on to an open market!

Posted Using LeoFinance Beta

It's an account owned by the exchange.

ahhh, OK thank you @engrave. So does that mean it's their Hive or is it the sum of peoples Hive that use Probit? sorry, I don't understand the mechanics of Hive works on the exchanges.

It's a deposit address for all their clients

I understand. Thank you for taking the time :-)

Seeing so much Hive accumulated in one account just brings back bad memories.

Let's hope the best.
