Social media has transformed the way we communicate. It has changed the way we socialize and do business. It has created a whole new dimension to society. Many people consider the evolution of this powerful new technology as a significant breakthrough in human interaction and only serves to support and improve the human experience. I tend to be cautious of that perspective.

Others argue, quite rightly, that social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter have resulted in people becoming more isolated from real face to face human interaction. I believe that whilst sites like Facebook have the intention of enriching social lives it actually ends up keeping people apart from one another. But can the same be said of Hive?
Hive v Other Social Media Sites
There are clearly two sides to this argument as to whether the adoption of social networking is a positive or negative thing. Online social networking has provided us with a new digital dimension to our social lives but has this been at a cost to our non-digital social reality? I think when assessing this argument it's very important to distinguish a platform like Hive from other social media sites like Facebook and Twitter.
For me Hive is a community in which I have learned so much about people and this world. I have developed a knowledge bank on finance and commerce, as well as government and politics that I could never have obtained from books or university. I have met some amazing people I would never have found. The Hive community is an extraordinarily powerful tool for education. The content I find on Hive is a world a way from Facebook content. In many ways Hive is like an encyclopedia and a newspaper and a place to have fun. It's so many things. Hive must be distanced from other types of social media platforms.
These days there a multitude of social media sites which we can access and the development of mobile communications has meant that access has never been easier and more reliable. It is because of this ease of use that an increasing amount of people are spending a ridiculous amount of time online and less time working on developing important social bonds in the physical world.
I can not stress enough the importance of distinguishing a platform like Hive to other social media sites, including others built on blockchains. Steem rode the seas for a long time and up to a point did a decent job of giving social media a good name. Now it's Hive's turn.
