Hive Survival Guide!

in #hive5 years ago (edited)

Welcome to the new Hive blockchain! As you may have noticed there are a lot of things that you will need to figure out in order to start posting/using the new blockchain so I have put this post together to possibly help those trying to do so.

Much of what I am including in the 'survival guide' can be found in my original article here: https://peakd.com/hive/@jacobpeacock/my-first-hive-post

A French version of this survival guide can be found here: https://peakd.com/@laruche/traduction-guide-de-survie-de-hive

It is also worth noting that I will be adding to this survival guide post as I find new things that might be helpful.

If you need a history lesson on why there is a new blockchain then the following article provides a good summation of events: https://cointelegraph.com/news/steem-community-resists-takeover-hard-fork-launches-hive-network

If you are an absolute beginner then I recommend reading over the following guide so that you can gain some general understanding about the Hive blockchain: https://peakd.com/hive/@remotehorst23/hive-beginner-tutorial

Personally I highly recommend using the new https://peakd.com interface and logging in via Hivesigner, or using the beta Hive Keychain (which requires manual installation) or on mobile using PeakLock

Please keep in mind that the Hive blockchain and all its associated projects are brand new and there will undoubtedly be plenty of things to fix and stuff that does not work correctly. Give it time and please be patient with those developing the blockchain and the applications that run on it!

Thanks for this primer.

Welcome to Hive!

Following.

You are quite welcome!

Nice collection of useful links!

I still haven't updated my witness votes here on Hive.

Thanks @nikolina!

Haha one of the first things that I did was to change a single Witness vote! The rest of them I was rather happy with!

Oooh, now I wonder...

Haha!

Lame ass OCD. Now you do not have to wonder!

Resahred this and definitely good links.

I was so.mad when.i didn't know what was going on. Trying to find the answer on my own was frustrating.

Thanks!!! It's live and there will be glitches. So I'm.gonna blaze as hard as I can. Chill! It will get fixed.

Yeah I got a bit frustrated at first as well so I compiled the information so that others would not have to face the same thing!

It is actually the most helpful and concise thing I have seen thus far but since I am not a part of any of the circle-jerk upvote cabals it will probably never earn shit for rewards.

Yeah I hear you. But it's good to be your own and make your own path...

That said though... seeing a shit post like this earning so much makes my blood boil a bit! https://peakd.com/hive-174578/@derangedvisions/welcome-to-the-revolution

I'm not one to judge...

Here to build.

But here is a vote so you can grow too.

Wise words.

Have a good day!

Agreed. That is exactly how I feel about it as well.

Great many thanks, but where is our hive token, where is the usual wallet? Do we have to download a seperate hive wallet now? The usual wallet does not exist when I click on it. What is going on with our hive tokens?

Hey many thanks, Peakd ... a Dapp or frontend like Steempeak I presume? Now I need to download a keychain it seems to log on and access that wallet of mine. It never ends with these keys after keys after keys...

If still wondering about PeakD, yes it appears that this is SteemPeak on Hive.

re: The keys- yea I know. And more beside. But this is a major benefit- hierarchy key sets. You realize how major after coming close to losing control of everything.

I've been using the steem versions of keychain and steemconnect for a long time with different steem apps. These are more benefit than pain (usually/eventually)- to address the pain. They reduce tendency to compromise security for convenience. If one isn't working for you the other usually will. I'm sure the new version or setting is better & worse. You'll come up with a system. Whatever it is.. it'll get better.

Great yes you are right, the keys help in the long run. I'm feeling more positive today. Hive token apparently only available as airdrop in a month to us, although showing in our wallet. I remember reading something like that.

Ah, you bring up a good point- gives more context to your earlier comment. I may have missed the post you described but got the "gist" somehow. I think that situation has now changed but it's not familiar territory. It screwed me of an oppty I was rightly in process of taking.

I just read your 21 day old post- "dog eaters". This is my experience almost EXACTLY just days ago before posts appeared (after the fact- a problem) which explained how blocktrades decided to restructured things. Did anyone else have knowledge that allowed them to use the gateway before it was locked? I provided an email addy when I registered. That gives permission to contact me I believe. Didn't happen. I submitted a support request a few days ago that I expect will go unanswered.

I'm blown away by how much blocktrades has done for the community but with that said-
Why am I thinking about the "glitch in the matrix"?

A cat crosses the path - twice (he's making a point). A brick wall appears- where and when I was there to make an exit. We've been there many times before without a hitch.

It's these experiences that severely limit how much I am willing to risk.

Excellent, I will include it in my help post.

Good deal! I am glad that you found it helpful.

Question: What is the best way to type in my password or private key to set up mobile sign-in?

I've tried using Hivesigner, and tried entering my password I created on my Desktop PC by hand, and it did not work. I tried entering my private posting key by hand, and that was really hard to do, and it did not work either. There is no way to know which keystroke it mixed up on because it hides each character instantly after I enter them in one at a time.

Maybe only PeakLock works for mobile? I'll try it out, but wish there was a simpler way to enter in the very long private key.

@creativetruth If you can copy and paste your key (or keys) on your mobile that would be the easiest way. You could email it to yourself, then copy and paste it.

PeakLock was designed for mobile use and works very well.

I have heard that Hivesigner works on mobile but I have not tested it myself. You may have to use the 'import account' button on Hivesigner, then import the account name and key and then create a new password because it is on a different device than your desktop.

Thanks for the response.

I can use steemconnect easily on my mobile phone, and login with a single click almost. Thought Hivesigner would be just as easy.

It looks like Hivesigner detects I am viewing the page on a mobile phone. It redirects me to some sort of import page and request a Hive username with a password or key. I cannot find any other options to set up a new Hivesigner password or import an account any other way. Maybe it was never intended for mobile use?

With Hivesigner you have to import the account with the key, then set a password each time you use a different device or browser.

excellent work 😄
