Hive Newbees Digest 002 - Getting Engaged

in #hive5 years ago (edited)

The Hive Newbee Digest is a weekly update post focusing on onboarding new members to the Hive Community. While my personal focus is on onboarding Surinamese creatives and creators to the platform, this digest is available to everyone on the platform and will be writing in English so everyone has easy access to the information. This is part 2. Read Part 1 here.

Fawaka Newbees!

Are you ready to Engage?

.You’ve now created a Hive account through @peakd, @esteemapp (@ecency), @threespeak or on

Hive.blog / Hive.blog

So, what’s next?

Getting started can be a little overwhelming. And just posting content out of the blue might just leave you unnoticed if you don’t have a community you can join straight away. You have read the Hive Newbees Digest 001 and have created an #Introduceyourself posts. You’ve seen several communities and dapps, but don’t really know where to start.

Well, then lets highlight some communities, contests and engagement tips.

Newbee Community Spotlight of the Week - The Terminal

Thanks to @brittandjosie for noting that I missed both @theterminal and @heyhaveyamet.

'Hey! Have ya met…?' helps with finding Newbees to connect with on the blockchain. With The Terminal, Newbees get encouraged to actively participate on Hive and share their experience on the platform as well. The main goals are to get Newbees to 500 Hive Power as quickly as possible, while teaching and encouraging quality content. Of course, they also encourage you to network on Hive as well. They post several different tipsDiscord channel, where they also have a Hive Power Up Day (hive-pud) room! (We’ll leave hive-pud for next week's Digest). on the @theterminal account, but you should definitely also check their

MinnowSupportProject

introduceyourself posts. The @minnowsupport project is a project that has been on the blockchain as long as I can remember. They have a full curation team that helps out with finding quality content, including the aforementioned

They have added a website link http://minnowpond.org/, which is a invite link that redirects to their discord and never expires, making it easy to join the discord group. The Peace, Abundance, Liberty network (PALnet in short) serves as a support system for the MinnowSupportProject (MSP) and helps out a lot of those just starting out on Hive.

How to deal with Discord groups

I can imagine that when you are new to this (no history with Social Media other than Facebook, YouTube, LinkedIn and Twitter, no history with blockchain/cryptocurrency, no history with gaming), it could be really overwhelming and it my feel like I’m pushing down a rabbit hole. But, hang in there. You will get through it.

Dealing with discord might by hard and time consuming at first (Yes, I know, another communication platform), but once you frequently interact on Hive, the use will change and you can decide wether or not it works for you. In the beginning when you don’t know anyone on the platform, it does help a lot. Also, the Hive Blockchain and most of the Dapps don’t have a messaging/chat feature, which makes Discord a nice addition.

The basic set up of most Discord groups all have a welcome room where you get greeted and a rules or guidelines page which explains how the discord works. Often, there is a introduction room where you get to introduce yourself to the group and different chat rooms where you get to meet others. Please take your time to read everything. The beginning is always the hardest. But even if you just read the announcements or ask for help when you got stuck, you will always find a couple of people who will make your time on Hive a lot better.

as she explains, it is meant to share different markets across the globe. It accentuates the cultural diversity on the blockchain through an educational experience as you really get to see markets from all over the world. You are free to share any kind of market, so make sure to share your local market on the Hive blockchain.A very popular contest on Hive is Market Friday. #MarketFriday is an initiative of @dswigle and

Onboarding Updates

HiveonboardI started using @roomservice's referral program (Thanks for bringing @hiveonboard to my attention @hivepeople) and sent out a Facebook post and a Tweet to test the waters for new members to join.

The second week, there is one new registered member:
Welcome @gregg0

You will be receiving this post in your inbox and I’m looking forward to seeing your introduceyourself post. I’ll be giving new members that joined through to my referral 15 HP delegation as long as I still have enough HP. If I run out, I might seek some help 🙂.

@gregg0 is one of the hosts of the Creative Confoes Podcast, a podcast in which I appeared as a guest to talk about my journey on Steem and the transition to Hive. When available I will share the video on @threespeak. The other hosts @diegoameerali and @timothylie both already had an account on Steem and are switching to Hive as well.

Note to everyone on Hive reading this

Please note that you might still have to change your intro, bio text and cover photo on both Hive and Twitter. While doing this weeks research I’ve stumbled upon many Hive exclusive accounts that still feature a Steem logo in the Cover or ‘steemians’ in descriptions. Just a heads up ;).

Proposals for changing the Hive terms

I do think it is a little weird to keep referring to members of Hive as Redfish, Minnows, Dolphins and Whales. I also understand that Eggs, Larvae, Pupae and Workers/Drones doesn’t fully cover it. But if somebody has started the proces of changing the terms, feel free to link me up.

Haven’t been featured?

Do you run a community or contest that hasn’t been featured in the Hive Newbees Digest, feel free to comment or reach out to me on Discord (Jeanlucsr#8411) to share your story.

Thank you for the kind mention of the Engagement League!

Some usual info here for those starting out, cheers :)

Happy to do so. Just making sure that new people coming in don't start out as confused about the blockchain as I did when I joined 😂

I'm a proud member of @theterminal redfish rally 100. The admins really have a way of making newbees comfortable

Awesome! Thanks for sharing @beckie96830!

You're welcome. I'm thrilled to have stopped by. Hope the corona virus isn't that much around your area

Corona unfortunately is affecting all of us. Our country was Corona free with only 10 cases, but then a lot of people from Brazil and French Guiana crossed the border around election time and the spread has yet to be fully contained.

How is the situation in Nigeria?

Well the numbers are rising definitely. Even the safety measures we put in place around my local government area isn't as effective as I thought it would be.

In as much as I can't do anything out the, my family and I have resolved to personal safety measures that includes drinking lemon juice every day to boost the immune system.

Has the election been conducted?

The hard part is we don't really know how the virus moves. Everything so far has been guesses. That's also what is a lot of people upset. Of course face masks and social distancing work, but can you blame someone who's life in on the streets and loses everything they have if they stay home for not obeying the rules?

Boosting the immune system is great for personal safety indeed.

Yes. The elections have been conducted and the results have been finalized.

I agree with you on that. It's really hard not to know the exact way of contracting the virus. I think they've exhausted all the passengers of the plane that brought it to my country.

Now those that have it are just wondering how and why. They may not have had direct contact with one of the passengers but yet they're suffering all this.

Wow. I'm this pandemic successful election has been conducted. Who won? At least it would help me trace it to your home country.

Another great intro post for newcomers - so much great things to get involved with but patience is key really!

Thanks a lot for mentioning the @yourtop3 contest and community too 💪

Thanks @nickyhavey!

You are absolutely right about having patience. I'll see how I can include that tip in the next digest.

Looking forward to participating in next month's @yourtop3 ;)

I've taken a little bit of downtime in June with posting on and about Hive but when I have shared successes, I've always mentioned patience, not thinking about post rewards and just use this as you would do any social network... the good things will come over time 😃

Oh we can't WAIT to have you with us in next month's @yourtop3 contest! Less than a week until the new topic and the doors open for entries now

I can get used to these Gifs.. gonna have to start making a couple as well 😂

Thanks for the great shoutout

We are not new but love to be the Newbee Community Spotlight of the Week - The Terminal

My pleasure. And thank you for pointing it out last week, so I could include it in this weeks digest. Hoping to see some Surinamese Newbees in The Terminal Discord in the near future 😊.

#lobi

Nice informative post @JeanLucSR. Yes indeed, the folks over at @TheTerminal are salt of the earth.

I wish I could help more onboarding Surinamers, but we haven't made many connections in the year we've lived here.

Don't worry bro. We'll be doing a Hive Meet Up in July in Paramaribo. It'll probably be a digital event, but you'll get a chance to introduce yourself as you are the most respected member in the Hive community living in Suriname 😊.

I'll hit you up on Discord once we have everything in place.

Oh and i think the ocean is a great world to reflect the steps in hive, and another change comes to soon if you ask me, and be honest do you want to be A LARVAE ?

😂😂😂 A Larvae sounds terrible right 😅

I'm not fully convinced the ocean terms work on Hive... but yeah, it still is beter than being called a larvae 😭

Shared this GIF on Twitter and completely spaced sharing it here...

Really appreciate the shout out, and love this digest - what an awesomesauce idea!

You really are the queen of GIFs 😊

That's a custom Traci gif with my name 😄....

.....Mommmmm... I made it!!!

Dang, I haven't made a GIF for you before? Bad Giphy Queen! I'll try not to slip up like that again... 😂

😂😂😂

Awesome, keep these digests coming. This one is particularly useful for me right now!

Will do. I think you might like next weeks as well. Already got some awesome input.
