Anyone is a sucker for travel, especially when it's free! This year, I am blessed to be residing in one of the most beautiful places in the world, and as you've figured out, my feet are very keen to explore this country even more. Contrary to popular beliefs, traveling around New Zealand doesn't have to be expensive as there are heaps of tourist spots here that can be accessed for free.
In my first days here in Rotorua, the first thing I did was to scan the area for famous tourist spots. Surprisingly, New Zealand is so generous to charge many of them for free, perfect for anyone running on a tight budget.
Right away, I will share these beautiful spots in Central Rotorua to you, where I got to enjoy for free.
#1 KUIRAU PARK
Now, if you had enough of the strolling, you can always sit down, grab a book, or simply take in the area's serene ambiance while resting.
#2 GOVERNMENT GARDENS
This is one of my favorite spots in the downtown area where I can quickly escape from busy streets. It sits next to government buildings, including the regional council, information site, and police headquarters. This makes me ponder how lucky those working proximately are since they got to immerse at the gardens conveniently when they need a quick breather.
When I got here, the first spot I ran to was the lavender spikes right at the front. Lavenders are known to be heliophiles, and the summer apparently does good to their growth. Oh, I was so starstruck that I couldn't miss having a photo of those.
Upon entering the gate, the area truly embodies its name. There are heaps of exquisite flowers around that complement the serenity of the place.
The Government Gardens also houses the city museum; however, it is still under renovation after being massively affected by the Christchurch earthquake. But, this didn't stop me from enjoying the place still. The area is so open that the cold wind suppressed the summer heat at that time. I just got into the moment feeling the breeze, sat down, and enjoyed my quick break.
#3 SULFUR BAY
A short walk away behind the Government Gardens leads you to a series of tourist destinations holed in one site. The view of manmade wetlands greets you upon entering the track. If you didn't have enough of mudpools and steaming vents at the Kuirau Park, this place is perfect for you.
Going forth, parks are situated as well if you'd just like to sit down with your friends and hang out. But just go a little further, and you'll see the most majestic lakeside view in central Rotorua.
In the middle of the lake is the famous Mokoia Island. Legend has it that it was once inhabited by Tutanekai, a warrior of Te Anawa tribe, who fell in love with a lady from the mainland named Hinemoa. With the guide of lover's music, the two were able to meet eventually, and the rest was history.
If fresh air does good for your mood and alleviates your stress, then definitely this a place to go.
#4 PARKS, PARKS, AND MORE PARKS!
You need no to go far honestly to find picturesque spots in Rotorua. Parks are strategically placed near communities where people spend leisure hours jogging, walking the pet, playing with friends and kids, or even meditating.
Parks here are vast and almost empty, which is perfect for anyone looking for peace.. and spots for candid poses.
In the next part of my Rotorua adventures, I'll feature, on the other hand, spots here that are situated near the countryside. Just a little preview: these are the most sublime places I've seen in New Zealand so far, which you've guessed it right, also for free!
For now this is it for my first Hive Kiwinie Travels.
I'll see you in my next post! Kia Ora!

You made me miss NZ again! My first trip to Rotorua was in 2001 and last one at the end of 2017. I enjoy the place as well as the distinct smell. I hope I'll be able to go back there in the future. Thank you for sharing.
I agree! Rotorua is a very interesting place full of secret spots and areas with cultural references. I hope to see you soon, here :)
It made me feel nostalgic to see Rotorua through your post. Indeed, there are so many places to visit in New Zealand for free and just within any town or city, the countryside is within reach buzzing with both beauty and adventure.
It's truly easy to call this home, too :) Locals here are so family-oriented and fun to be with, pretty much like Filipinos, eh? Thank you for reaching out too, @discoveringarni :)
That is so true, I found our kabayans really warm and friendly there like old time friends. I look forward to your next posts.
I agree. Everybody here is keen to help. Thank you @discoveringarni! Your kind words mean so much to me :)

One of the things that really make me consider about traveling is the cost. Having all of these destinations free of charge definitely makes them so much more worth visiting
Definitely! i love it here in Hive because it gives me ideas of several hole in the wall and secret spots which I can explore for free :)
