Follow Friday: Growth and progress

The News

Nothing much to report on this week that I have seen. Hive is still under active development with efforts to make it possible for more people to run a node. I would love to be a witness, but cannot justify the cost right now. If I can get to a stage where Hive is giving me decent income I will consider it. I am thinking of spending some of my earnings from posts, curation and games as I need new running shoes.

$HIVE is maintaining its lead over 'the other coin' after lagging behind for so long. The markets can be fickle, but support still seems strong.

@splinterlands is close to being the biggest gaming dapp after recent growth. If that continues it could become the biggest dapp of all, but we will have to see if it can keep growing like this. They finally released some new cards this week that may help new players progress. Buying cards can be ridiculously expensive.

I am always looking for people to add to the #BritList. I use some scripts for that, but I will miss some. Let me know of any you find.

Friday Follows

I am struggling a bit to find people to include in this segment, so I welcome suggestions. I tend to look at what I have re-posted and who has commented over the week.

  • @fbpowers contributed an insightful review to the Whisky/Whiskey community.
  • @samsmith1971 runs a contest where you can win some POB tokens.
  • @beardoin is from Scotland and new to Hive. They are into photography and music production.
  • @nathen007 did a #FollowFriday post last week. I am always happy to see others building the community.
  • @risingstargame is closing in on 2000 active players. You can start earning for free in the game, but it is also a lot of fun with a great community.

The Doghouse

A large elephant in the Hive room is the @ranchorelaxo account. It votes with over a million HP and has a delegation to @haejin who was driven away from posting here for abusive self-voting. Those two accounts vote up various posts and this can have a large effect on the rewards distribution. I believe Haejin may have the posting keys to control the vote or Rancho is following his trail, but someone claiming to be the owner of Rancho said they had lost the keys and so could not change the delegation or withdraw funds. So we are stuck with this major influence for good or ill. I guess the only way to change that would be for the witnesses to support excluding their transactions, but I know they will be reluctant to take such action. Hive is supposed to be about freedom and excluding anyone would set a bad prescedent.

Some people may be lucky to get a massive vote from these accounts, but you are at risk of it being removed by the community to re-balance the rewards. Much as some dislike downvotes they were intended to deal with such issues as well as other abuse to prevent anti-social behaviour.

The End

We are over two thirds through 2021. Do you have predictions of what may happen by the end of the year? Will $HIVE reach new highs? Will we have a breakthrough in signups and activity? Will a major celebrity start posting here?

Hive five!

Thanks for the mention @steevc 🙏Really interesting about the elephants in the room... I wasn't aware of this. Potentially there is a need for a protocol on Hive to set maximum VP values? What's to stop wealthy individuals from opening multiple accounts and cross-voting between them to suck all the rewards out of the system? I cannot comment specifically on the accounts mentioned as I have no knowledge or experience of either one of them but I would hope that sense and sensibility would prevail when it comes to disallowing misuse and abuse of VP on the Hive.

Part of why I want to see the price go up is that it makes it harder for anyone to buy in and take over, but then there is limited $HIVE available on the markets. We should power it up to put it out of reach. We already have ways to stop a new buyer taking over the witnesses as Justin tried to. I think we need the minimum of rules and then people can act to control what happens.

The story about rancho is crazy! I had no idea!

Never received an upvote from it, but I've seen a lot of people benefiting from it.

I don't see a mass adoption, but a slowly increase of daily users, and the price will increase up to 0.85 again.

There's been all sorts of drama over the years. Maybe someone will write a book about it.

We keep getting new people. Need to lose less though. Some don't stick around. Just been helping sort out a case of stolen identity. We will get some fraud and need to stay vigilant.

!BEER

That's crazy, but not suprising! Lot's of cases of stolen id throughout the blockchain years.

Thanks for the mention for this week, is very much appreciated :)

Hell yeah, screw steem lol. That rancho account story is kinda crazy, heard about it little while back.

I think price needs to find some support, although its been holding the .75 cent range pretty well. Low market cap. I can see getting to a cap of 1 bill someday soon. Would be a reasonable target considering something like garbage SHIB has a cap of like 4 bill i think.

It seems crazy that coins with no real utility are valued higher. Hive has thousands of people using it every day. It should be top 20 really.

!BEER

I like that you call "it", "the other coin". We shall not even speak its name lol.

True though man, plenty of engagement consistently past couple years but weve stayed under the radar still. Building up it seems.

Cheers to that beer!

I don't like to mention the name for whatever difference it may make to SEO :)

Thanks for a great read! Your writings and other posts help motivate me to try my hand at new topics and ideas myself!

I find it interesting how I found Hive through Steem, which I found through misspelling the gaming platform name "Steam" in Google.

I wonder if others have found the engine this way too? Just a thought ^.^ Stay safe 👋

I found St--m by word of mouth, but Hive is such a generic name that maybe some people find it by accident. I think the branding is a problem as people may not realise that all the dapps are part of the same thing and searching for Hive finds other things. I keep bringing this topic up, but I don't think there's a rush to use another name.

Thanks for sharing! :)

@djjamesblack is worth a mention, unless you have mentioned him before.

I think I might have. I have been meaning to write a script to go back through all these posts to get some stats.

I think I have gotten some votes from those accounts in the past. Likely it is following a trail if that is the case. I'd hate to think my rewards would get removed just because a specific person voted for me. Especially give the time and effort I put into each of my posts. They totally deserve a big payoff now and then.

I don't think we can take any rewards for granted. It's not necessarily about how much effort you put in as we know some people make a lot whatever they do. It is a lot about who you know or who just decides to support you. Hive may never be 'fair'. People have different reasons for voting.

from these two graphs it seems that STEEM is losing compared to HIVE, recovering for STEEM will be difficult since it does not have a large ecosystem like that of HIVE. We will see what happens in 2022.

Hey, at least half of Rancher's rewards goes to the people.

That's SOMETHING.

But that's also a good idea about forking some persistent abusive accounts out, but I doubt there would be support for it, as you say.

It's a tricky one, but in the grand scheme of things you know I think Hive is doing pretty well on the abuse front.

Yes Rancho does contribute to the reward distribution, but if they really lost their keys then their curation rewards are locked up forever. We want rewards to go where they are earned, but I have no idea what their votes are based on. If it's haejin in control he may just want to troll the community.

Abuse would be far worse if it wasn't for HW and others acting against it. From what I've seen there is a lot of crap out there, but most people just won't see it and may think everything is fine. At least we are not flooded with comment spam (yet) apart from a certain account. Blacklists may become an important tool. I see hive.blog can use them, but I have not totally figure it out.

THe price should follow the value the chain brings but who knows how market will react. It has yet to see the possibility of decentralized social platform in Hive. I guess market is looking to celebrities like Jack or Elon to point towards a platform. Until then ..😇

The market is not always about utility. Lots of short terms speculation as well as long term investments.

My prediction for the end of the year is that hive rise to 1dollar probably

I would hope it can at least get there. I don't know where BTC will be by then. $HIVE is about 1600 Satoshis and I think it should be higher than that.

Hoping for the best before the end of the year
