Follow Friday - Music matters

in #hive5 years ago (edited)

Hey, hey, it's Friday! Unfortunately that does not mean going to the pub and getting out and about these days. We have to be content with amusing ourselves at home as we sit out this pandemic. I hope everyone is okay and that things are improving, especially if you have not been able to get out much.

The Hive sites are getting some traffic now and rank about Steemit on @stateofthedapps. That obviously takes more than just users into account.

Dapps

We do need to get more people using Hive. We need to make it a better place to be than Steem was. That means getting rewards where they are earned. There is very little vote buying going on here, but some big accounts do self-vote a lot (see below). Meanwhile on Steem things are getting worse with trending dominated by paid votes on posts that have little or no interaction.

I am still powering down my Steem. HIVE is worth a little less than Steem, so my HP could go up nicely. Could I reach orca by the time my power down completes? I am still earning a little Steem from posts, comments and curation. I may leave some there so I can use the account if I feel like it.

Hive Rocks

I thought I would focus on music for this week's #FollowFriday.

  • @theplunge has had other accounts on Steem. He is instigating some music challenges on Hive that include a new open mic called the Covid Sessions and also a collaboration to make a song. I have entered the former, but not looked into the latter yet.
  • @cabelindsay is also doing an open mic which I have entered. I have plenty of songs I can record and I welcome any excuse to play.
  • I found @montycashmusic via these challenges. He has some cool original songs.
  • @partitura offers something a little different in the form of organ music. I want to see all forms of music here.
  • @recording-box operates a studio and is posting about some recording sessions they have done. I need to check those out to see what I can learn.

The doghouse

I am going to feature a well established user of Steem and now Hive called KingsCrown. I have not paid too much attention to him before, but I know his posts do well. That is in part due to him awarding himself multiple self-votes each day using a large amount of leased SP/HP. He could make more than me even without doing this if people are going to vote for him anyway. I do note that some of his posts get no comments at all, so is it just a matter of chasing curation rewards?

Kingscrown

I downvoted a few of his posts to cancel out a little of his unearned rewards along with many others and got some retaliatory downvotes in return. I assume that is to try and deter me from doing this again, but I do not back down to bullies. They need to be called out for their actions.

Downvotes

Note that he is also voting up his posts on Steem, some of which are the same, so he has a nice income from this. Some of the Steem posts are just a Youtube music video, so there was almost zero effort involved. He has other accounts that he uses to increase his income.

I am not downvoting on Steem any more as I am reducing my investment there and do not care too much what happens to it since the hostile takeover. If Steemit are happy to let this behaviour continue then they will struggle to get credibility. This is why I think the Hive community should act to produce a better distribution of rewards that is more about what the community like. That can help counter arguments that it is all self-serving.

breaks down how he operates and has cancelled out those flagd. Thanks.Update: @azircon

It is up to us what Hive becomes.

Please share your own #FollowFriday suggestions in comments or a post. If you know people who want a Hive account then I may be able to help as I have claimed a load of accounts using RCs. I will delegate to people with a proven track record of creating good content on other platforms.

Hive five!

Interesting statistics @SteevC! Thanks for the info. Have a BRO!

Cheers for the mention @steevc ,

For me Hive is just an unconditional outlet, a decentralized one. Using it to hone and sharpen my skills in music, video making and blogging/writing. To slowly increase the quality of my content over time, putting in more and more effort as I receive valued feedback and responses.

I know that there isn't a lot of user engagement generally. You can see this quite obviously when you get a curation vote and you look at your youtube/3speak video that you posted as the primary content on your post and it shows up as one or two views.

So actual, genuine user engagement is quite rare. I'm not concerned with this primarily because personally I just need a continual project that keeps my mind busy, and keeps me active with my music with a small incentive, but in the long-run, this has to change.

It looks good when you share a post to a friend through a mailing list and the perceptual value of the post is high.. but that's about it. That's generally how the rest of centralized media works through projected perceptual value primarily, to seed actual value in reality.

I want to see Hive prosper. I even invested some money which I really didn't have to spare when it first started, my first crypto investment (of which the value of that investment has now halved). Not a seasoned investor, there is probably an unspoken rule about waiting for the price of something to stabilize. Learning new things everyday! haha

I'm glad for the adventure in watching this community that I am a part of develop and I'm willing to engage now more than I have because I see Hive is something worth working for. Steem was a start to this initiative but feeling part of Hive, a community that is truly decentralized, feels like we're working towards a new society that functions more equally for everyone.

Our efforts in the decentralized world creates waves in the real world. This is a great incentive to keep up with Hive.

Whatever the motivation/starting point, the development of Hive is good for everyone. Thanks for your pro-active input into this blockchain!

I hope Hive is useful and fun for you. I have watched the evolution of the Steem/Hive platform for well over 3 years now. I have tried to get more people involved, but it is frustrating work. I get that they can get a bigger audience on other platforms, but you have to start somewhere. I want to be able to support my favourite bands with votes on their videos and posts. In these times where they cannot play gigs that ought to be of interest.

The engagement here is vital to me and it is frustrating when a post gets little or no response. This is part of why I comment so much. People appreciate the feedback and it can mean as much as the rewards.

I had hoped by now that we could have millions on the blockchain, but we still have a long way to go. People are put off by several things including:

  • The complexity
  • Cryptocurrency = crime/drugs
  • There are some nasty people using the platform without being censored

We have to try and improve the perception of what an open platform offers. Just being active here is a start.

Rock on!

Thanks for the mention @steevc, hopefully we can get some more people involved and now we also know about @partitura and @recording-box. Will definitely look at what they are up to! Working with recording box to maybe do a mix on the 1 minute co labs could be cool.

hey @theplunge! yeah, cool! I would love to help with the 1 minute Co Labs. You're welcome to send over whatever material you need help with: [email protected].

Cheers! Always here to help. I used to mostly live in the shadows, but these days I come out a lot :)

Lot of my friends complained that I live mostly in the DMs, and they want me to change that! Sigh!

:)

I always welcome people getting involved. It is supposed to be a social platform after all. But then again you can choose to operate in the shadows. Have fun.

I’m disappointed to see Ezzy on his upvote trail, I briefly met him at one of the SteemFests. Seemed like a nice guy.

Still him, slowalker and old stone are pding means less reward.

I think some people just play the curation game regardless of the worth of the posts, and probably do okay from it. I have met Ezzy too. His choice to do so.

Poor Steemy

Hive is really going and moving forward at a high rate

I just want to say that I do value your comments, but you ought to express yourself a little more or it looks like you are just fishing for votes. I can see you comment on a lot of posts, but sincerity matters.

No problem

I can't believe people are still doing the self votes on comments. Just appalling. I do self votes on my one account because I don't have many followers, but upvoting comments is just dumb. I have little respect for those sorts.
