“Thoughts on the HiveBloPoMo Challenge (Post #28)” by Richard F. Yates (Holy Fool)

Counting this post, there are only THREE more posts in my November #HiveBloPoMo challenge: 30 posts and 30 poems in 30 days… There were definitely days where I did NOT feel like posting or where the idea of trying to make a poem that fits in a specific format (I’m doing haiku)…I just wasn’t feeling it. Like ZERO percent. HOWEVER, I made a commitment to this process, and I figured I would finish it! (Still two more posts to go after this one, but I’m optimistic!!!)

Interestingly, despite the “glut” of content, the “up-votes” came fairly consistently! From an economic perspective, this should show folks one thing: consistency can pay off. I also realize that I’ve been on this platform building an audience for over three years, so not everybody is going to have the same LEVEL of positive feedback as I did, but making content---and pushing yourself---can actually pay off.

From a creative viewpoint, making artwork and forcing myself to write every single day has helped me practice on my craft(s), learn what works and what doesn’t, and helped to develop the ability to COMPLETE something. (Time management is an issue with me. I’m on medication that makes me tired, I spend a lot of time hanging with my toddler granddaughter (meaning NOT working on writing---because writing requires concentration and thought, both of which are in short supply when my attention is focused on keeping the little kid alive!), and sometimes there are OTHER things that I would like to do (like watch ghost shows or listen to music), but I made sure to get my posts day before going to be (or sleep, at the very least…) AND I’m happy with a lot of the artwork and even some of the bad poems, which is cool.

I’m considering making a pdf zine after this is all over that includes every poem and every one of my “Good Night” Twitter artworks for the month. (Along with HiveBloPoMo, I also started posting an original, unseen, new artwork every night on Twitter before going to bed.) I’m not 100 percent committed to that project, but in a couple of days, I will have the materials that I would need if I WANTED to make a book like that. Making LOT OF STUFF is giving me OPTIONS.

All things considered, I’m glad the challenge is almost over, but there are definitely positives to making oneself produce new work. Speaking of new stuff, here’s today’s new haiku!

Something was eating the shoes
And I think that’s great!

Wooooo! Nonsense is fun (if you ask me!) (Only TWO MORE Low-kus to go… [A Low-ku is a “low-brow” haiku!])

One fun thing before I call it a night: Here is a remix of one of the drawings I posted last night, tweaked out by my good friend, Mark Counts!

That’s it! Done!

You remind me a little of Gus Fink. Not so much in the comparison of your artwork, but more in the tenacity of staying the course and making a living as an independent artist.

Head down and stay the course! Sometimes the winds are favorable, and sometimes it's a slog, but you gotta keep the boat afloat! Ha! (Thanks for comment! I hadn't heard of gusfink! Looks like an interesting artiste!)

Hi Richard,

This reminds me of partaking in nanowrimo ( national novel writing month ), back in November 2019.

Although a month of forced writing ( and having to average over 1600 words a day to make my goal ) made me sick and led to 50k words of 'novel material' that I never managed to turn into a novel, I also learnt a lot from this experience. What is even cooler is that it led to what is now my future ( little ) books series based around the character of 'Hypersensitivosaurus'.

Congratulations on your streak and don't feel bad about taking a break from creativity every now and then. You deserved it. Also, health and sleep are underrated.
