In the morning after the second conference day, I was meeting up with some Hive friends to talk business. Because the GPS on my phone wasn't leading me directly to them, due to all the small alleys in the city, I came across some pretty buildings. And since I knew I'd probably never find those again, I decided to take some photos as I walked.
Later, we'd walk to the pool place together, which gave me more photo moments.
So let's have a look at what I found.
Pretty buildings everywhere
Split truly is stunning, I was really impressed. Clean too. I don't know if the rest of Croatia is the same, but Split is just beautiful.
All the little streets and buildings seem old. I don't think everything is from when the Romans roamed the streets here, but lots of it is, and whatever isn't, is still older than me. Which makes me feel good about myself haha. Just look at this lovely shopping street!
You could almost eat off the street here, because they clean it every night! Please don't go telling people that you did eat off the street because misslasvegas told you so.😆
I just loved this little clock tower. And the buildings surrounding it.
And another little alley. If Split has plenty of one thing, it's little alleys...I could not help but wonder if I was walking where once roman soldiers walked...
Another alley way with interesting designs. I wish I would have stopped a bit more to take it all in, but it's a good reason to come back!
And finally, I found my friends. At a square, close to the port, overlooking the sea. Beautiful!
I sat down for a little while to discuss a few things and they explained to me how it all worked (more about that another time). Then we decided to make our way to the pool hall, thinking we could get some work done there, but it was way too loud for it haha.
On the way there, I noticed a HUGE agave plant. It doesn't look so big in the photo, but it was bigger than me. I've never seen them this big, even here in Mexico.
So I was wondering where the mezcal was...
As we walked on, we saw olive trees, which was quite cool. I had to go and try one, but it wasn't very nice. Still, at least I tried it haha. Then we found this pomegranate tree/bush...Not sure which one it is. Again, we had to pick some and try it. They were not 100% ripe yet, but already quite tasty though. A week later they'd probably be perfectly fine.
And right next to the pomegranate tree, there was a fig tree! How cool is that?
Just to think you're in a big(ish) city, and there's fresh fruit growing on trees.
Cool huh?
And of course, I had to try those too. Not very nice just yet. But almost edible...
It was only a short walk, so before we knew it, we were at the pool hall.
Unfortunately, I don't have any photos of that, at all. I was too busy talking to people, and one lady in particular, @ana-maria, from Croatia. She shared some stories with me about the war, and that was quite something. I could never imagine what that was like, just like I could never imagine what it was like for my parents living through WWII. I can only go by the stories from people who lived through it, and it's nice to hear it first hand, rather than history classes or books.
I believe @ana-maria and I got along quite well, she's a really lovely woman, and I really hope to meet her again. If not at the next Hivefest, then maybe in Croatia.
As our time at the pool hall came to an end, people were getting hungry, so we walked around the corner, since there was a small burger place there called "The Fat Boar".
From what I know, they were supposed to be open till 12, but there was nobody inside.
So they must have decided to close early, when we arrived, because the hosts almost fell off their chairs when they saw us marching in. The lady that tended the bar thought it was quite funny, but the man who took our orders looked at us with no expression on his face. No emotion, but we detected pure horror. It was funny to everyone. Of course, we don't know how long he'd been on his feet, since hospitality isn't for the faint of heart.
Anyway, he took everyone's orders, the lady was happy and laughing through it all, and the food was amazing actually. I had a burger and fries, and it was excellent. But because I was one of the first to order, and one of the last to receive my food, the owner (I think) ordered the lady behind the bar to pour me a Croatian drink. I can't remember the name, but it's similar to Jägermeister, but better. I don't really like Jägermeister, so that should say something.
Hamburger, fries, and mayo for the fries (yes, I'm Dutch, I eat mayo on my fries) and great company, what else can a woman ask for?
After everyone was done with their food, we all took Ubers and taxis to wherever we were going.
A few of us ended up going to a bar/nightclub (bit of both) to continue the fest in our own way.
I didn't get many photos of that, but here's a great one (I think). Blurry, but hey, it was a long day.
Here's me and @louis88 and @masterswatch having a good time.
I have some videos of that night too, but I believe I have to edit someone's face out before I can post that one. Ah well, so be it.
All in all, it was a great day and night, and I can honestly say that I was tired once I got back to the apartment. More fun to do the next day, so I needed the few hours of sleep...
