Small garden - setting up crop June 2023.jpg

On Monday morning it was just as humid but the temps were around 70F so I ate breakfast and was in the garden by 6:45AM. I got set up and started laying out the last row of brassicas and then the cherry tomato stakes.

I pounded in the 3 stakes myself and put the ladder away, then started planting. I’d spread the mulch from the remains of the pile along the brassica row, so I could mulch as I went.

I spread the remaining mulch on the other rows once everything was planted and mulched. Then I moved the truck and started using bales to mulch. I got the area all finished and cleaned up the remaining area to plant. I have 2 rows of onions going in there.

I got the last of the amendment mix for the Small garden out and spread it, reserving a little for the raspberries and the rose, hibiscus and mountain laurel on the sides of the garden.

By this time it was pushing 10AM and I was soaked with sweat from the humidity, so I called it quits. I’m hoping I get a spell between showers on Tuesday when my helpers are here and we can finish this garden.

After a shower, I laid down to read and watch a video. Then I got a pleasant surprise.

Crosley player from Ginger crop June 2023.jpg

My old helper and friend from way back had come to visit and was bearing a gift. She is in the process of moving to Maine and is downsizing. She brought me this Crosley player that does records, CDs, cassettes, and radio.

I’ve got hundreds of cassettes, some of which I’ve not heard in decades. I opened the chest where they are stored and got out the DO’A World Music Ensemble from 1983. I’d been thinking of that album off and on for a while and it was nice to hear it again. She thought we still had our LP’s but my husband had sold them a decade ago. I still have 1, a signed hammer dulcimer album.

This is a lovely gift and I will enjoy it I am sure. I just have to find a place to put it. I’m thinking in the office. I probably won’t see a lot of my old friend once she moves to Maine as she won’t have much reason to return to the valley and I can’t get to her. That makes me very sad.

The rain had stopped and my old tenant came and got the tree cut off the fence. He will come back when the rain stops on Thursday to get the branches cut up and disposed of.

On Tuesday if it rains, I still have laundry to do, cuttings to make from the white rose, which I brought inside on Sunday, winter clothes to put away, errands to run, and several other chores to attend to. I’ll have both helpers in the morning.
