Animal Crossing: New Horizons is Still Missing Old Features
I stayed up all night for one day this summer playing Animal Crossing. From dusk ‘til dawn, I played, and it reminded me of the days that I used to play the original Animal Crossing on the Nintendo GameCube. As a kid, I was a gamer and an early-riser. So, in summer mornings when school wasn’t in session, I would power up my all-time favorite gaming system and start my day right: with morning aerobics in Animal Crossing—a feature not present in the Animal Crossing New Horizons experience.
That’s right. In previous games, the player could partake in morning aerobics with their villagers, Mayor Tortimer, and Copper, one of the game’s two staple police dogs, during summer mornings. Animal Crossing: New Horizons, however, forces the player to endure his or her aching body while their villagers are freely able to stretch in all sorts of yoga poses.
I know that Nintendo is rolling out consistent free updates for Animal Crossing, and while it’s been amazing to have features new to the franchise, I’m also hoping that these retired Animal Crossing features make their way back into the series (even if Tortimer doesn’t.)
Morning Aerobics
Animal Crossing (GameCube) players who were playing from 6am – 7am on sunny summer (July 25th to August 31st) days could do morning aerobics.
If players spoke to Mayor Tortimer at any time during the practice, they would receive a special Aerobics radio after 14 sessions. This allowed players to perform these exercises in their house at any time.
Seeming as though we can see the villagers doing an assortment of stretches signals to me that its possible players will be able to make their characters stretch as well. If this is true, I’d also love the ability to sit under a tree, just like the villagers can.
Kickable Ball
Animal Crossing (GameCube) players were able to find sports balls laying around their town from time to time. These balls were not items that could be picked-up or placed in the villager’s home. These balls were able to be kicked around like real balls!
It’s absurd to me that we could have the soccer goals as items in Animal Crossing: New Horizons (which weren’t present in the GameCube version of the game), but no balls to play with! While we do have basketball hoops now—it would probably be difficult for them to implement basketball gameplay. The ability to kick a ball around, however, has been around since the beginning of Animal Crossing, and can definitely be added in an update for New Horizons.
Collectible Gyroids
The gyroid/Lloyd character has always had a role in the Animal Crossing franchise. In Animal Crossing: New Horizons, the gyroid has taken the role of the donation collector for construction work done on the island. In past games, however, players could collect Gyroids and furnish their house with them to create beautiful symphonies. Why would they retire such an awesome feature?
