As I was browsing the internet while the rain brought by tropical storm Nalgae rages outside, I saw a post shared by a friend. I usually don’t pay attention to shared posts but this one caught mine.
They say, a picture paints a thousand words. Picture above did exactly that. It even brought a deluge of emotions. Sadness, anger, helplessness, pity, and most of all- hope.
I could only imagine how that dog must be feeling during that moment. But seeing that picture highlighting the great contrast of their (dogs’) separate lives reminded me of my own two dogs. I immediately saw their bright and happy faces. All my memories of them are about happy events and places. They’re the lucky ones.
Here let me introduce them to you.
Meet Dante. He's 5 y/o now. Though big, he's very sweet. The gentle giant of the house.
Call me Dusty! Don't be fooled by my size. I may be small and cute, but I'm the BIG boss. 👑
It's probably the reason why this FB picture caught my attention. I'm fully aware that there are suffering animals out there. Animals facing hardships daily and wishing for better days to come. I wish I could do more to help them. The moment I saw the photo, I immediately wanted to go and be at the place where that picture was taken. Take the poor dog away and carry the dog home with me. But that’s impossible and just my wishful thinking.
I felt sad and helpless because I could do nothing to comfort that skinny dog. I was mad as well because I'm capable of so much compassion and love for our pets but at the same time, I'm capable of abandoning others in need too. That's what the picture made me realize.
I see stray cats and dogs everyday. In fact, we have at least 5 stray cats that come and go to our house.
The shy little one😳. Grey
This one is so sweet 🍫 but loves to bite! Toothless
Scarface. Quite scary 😱 at first, but he's got great personality. The Alpha of the neighborhood.
I just let them be and treat them like normal house pets. Whenever they’re around our home, they would find food, a safe place, and some warmth from our family. Which I think is the reason why they always come back to us. This made me feel hopeful. Even though I could not help that dog in the picture, it brought me consolation and peace realizing that I am already helping those animals in need- in my own little way.
I shared this post today because I wanted to convey my thoughts about these unlucky strays. I think they too deserve our attention- not disdain nor hate. They're not asking that much- some food... and little compassion.
To you my dear friends out there, fellow pet owners, I hope that you will extend your love not just to your pets but to those pets which were abandoned, the not so lucky ones as well.
That’s what the picture above perfectly captured. Strays do desire some love and warmth from their fellow animals. More so, from us.
Keep growing,
abnkkbsnplako
They definitely deserve our help. You're right that we can't help every creature on Earth. But we can and should help those in front of us.

Oh that first photo is heartbreaking. 😥 I'm glad there are neighborhood cats who know they can come to you.
We have strays sometimes here, and sometimes they are found to have been obviously been on the street a long time, but on the other hand, people are so keen to help a stray that often they will take someone's indoor/outdoor cat (a cat that has a home, but is allowed outside to wander the neighborhood) to the shelter, and then the human has to pay a fee ($90, according to a recent post I saw) to get their cat back!
There was one post on social media of someone sharing their cat photo and saying "please don't take him to the shelter, he has a home, I just had to pay a lot of money," and this other guy chimed in that that had happened to his cat so many times he couldn't afford the fees (hundreds of dollars!).
It is more common to keep cats indoors in cities here (my cat Yuan is an indoor cat), but it's gotten to the point that people don't seem to think anyone lets their cat out on purpose. A couple of times I've seen a cat and wasn't sure, I waited until I saw a person and said, "Hey, do you know this cat? He lives in the neighborhood and isn't lost?" And they said yeah so I knew the cat was fine. People usually know their neighbor cats, I wish people would just ask if they aren't sure!
Indeed it was.
We don't have shelters here so strays are just left to wander around. But there are org actively helping these animals.
