Hubby says one of the books that influenced him tremendously in business is called The Toyota Way by Jeffrey K. Liker. He had to read the book for a college class and it's one of the few he kept. Having worked in automotive for most of his life he has seen first hand the benefits of muda (waste), one piece flow, the five whys etc. While he isn't in automotive now, he is still in manufacturing and this company is just starting the journey of lean. The concepts in this book are valuable and can be applied to any business.
The Lean Farm by Ben Hartman (Clay Bottom Farm is local to here) is an example of that. Testing the waters of market gardening, I came across the book while doing research. I found a copy at my library and have been reading it heartily. This is one to buy because I'll certainly be re-reading it.
Now when I'm doing my daily chores, I'm starting to think about how I can apply lean concepts to homemaking. We not really doing manufacture (well, we manufacture messes), but I think I can look for ways to improve how I cLEAN. (ha, get it?) I need all the help I can get.
I do think this fits in perfectly with the concept of minimizing, which is still my work in progress. I had to laugh at myself when I was loading up the car with a dozen bags and boxes to donate, I was pulling things back out to keep. I knew I shouldn't, but I did it anyway. And just keeping it real...all the clothes I pulled from my drawers and closet are still in my dining room. I think I've only returned on thing back into my closet, but the rest are still waiting for me to sever the ties and donate them. Really...who does this? Me. I do it. sigh
I am kind of thankful that my son has no problem letting things go. He cleaned some things out of his room to donate and I was dismayed that some things he was donating. "But you loved that, don't you want to put it away and save it?" He just looked at me like I had a third eye. I may or may not have pulled out a few things to keep for him.
Have you heard of the concepts of lean? Have you read either of these books? I'd love to hear what you think about it. Let me know in the comments.
Until next time...grace and peace.
