On my usual bike ride, I pass this house that is rather strange but very intriguing. It’s a geodesic dome home. I did a little research and these can be made pretty much tornado/hurricane proof.
This one needs a little bit of TLC asthetically, but it’s very efficient and a great home in an emergency situation like I mentioned above. My wife and I rode our bikes by it today and I snapped the picture above. We would really like to build/have one built in the next... oh say ten years or so. Once we make it big haha.
Does anyone have any experience with these? I was seriously thinking about living in a yurt for a while, but the whole hurricane thing make that a real “no”. I’ve heard these domes can be extremely energy efficient. They are also really cool (pun intended). I’m going to put some pictures of ones I like from the internet below. Nice to look at, but I prefer something underground ultimately. I was looking into decommissioned Atlas F missile silos. Many of them have water leakage issues (one in Texas had about 40 feet of water to be drained out, but the asking price was about $30K).
I've noticed that much is made of the Radon gas issue. Government doesn't want you to build underground. It's much harder for them to root out gophers, but those who build above ground structures can be invaded like Waco.
So my ideal home would be an underground structure built on a hill above the water table. The ground temperature is a little above 40 F year around once you get below 4'. This means that you don't need air conditioning in the summer time and in the winter, you don't burn as much wood because the difference between indoor comfortable temperature and the ground is rarely more than 30 degrees.

I plan to build one soon - I was actively planning it out a while ago but got distracted. I think if you build an Earth ship - they can withstand earthquakes and more ;)
True - but I think I would have to buy a lot of acreage to hide it from zoning peeps. lol
My uncle built a dome like that then put poly over it. His goal was to fill it with cow shit and heat his house with the gases. He never finished it but dome is still there after 30 years.

Thanks to Backminster Fuller for that design! You could playfully start with a smaller self-made version like a greenhouse. I made already a little model for the day that a dream comes true.
I recall seeing plans for sale for these in old copies of Popular Science. Fascinating!! I hope you get to build one.
I am most interested in building an Earth Ship due to the high sustainability factor relating to heating and cooling, as well as the lower impact on the land it will be integrated in.
