A quote for today

“Self-education is the only possible education; the rest is mere veneer laid on the surface of a child's nature.” ― Charlotte M. Mason

I have been out of school for a very long time and have forgotten a lot of what the education system provided. An education was important to get my first job and launch a career, but it is the things I have learned throughout my life that are of the most value.

Have a great day! Every comment is up-voted to show our appreciation and thanks for your up-vote, Tim and Joann.

When I graduated from college and went to work, I thought I was pretty doggone smart, mature, and had a good handle on life. Now, looking back at many things I thought and did in my 20's and into my 30's, it's just downright embarrassing. I hope I continue to learn and prove my younger self wrong.

You are not alone. Looking back I was pretty dumb too.

Excellent quote, that not only applies to children but to all people. Most everything I know I learned by doing. the classroom only ever gave me the tools I needed to do the things I wanted.

Agreed, I went to school started a career but just doing things hands on is where you really can learn!

Ahhhh this is so true.
It is true for adults as well as for children. We practice child-led learning around here, and it is very difficult to let go of the idea that you have to cram 'school subjects' down a child's throat for them to learn. They learn what they need very well! If THEY are the ones initiating the learning, it happens SO fast! If you MAKE them learn something they are not interested in, it is like pulling teeth...

One of the oddest jobs of a homeschool Mom is to figure out how to teach by encouraging learning. You really can't make a kid learn. You have to simply give the tools, some general directional guidance and encouragement. As a mom, though, the first instinct is to say, "Now here's what you need to know: absorb it!"

Jaimie feels the same way.
