A Term I just made up...or so I thought
....................................................................................................................................................
I have a very active imagination. Some would say wild and uncontrolled but don't listen to them. THEY suffer from a common defect...a FAILURE of imagination....but I digress.
I've learned the hard way to check the internet. In these cases google IS your friend....so I did
I enter the search term 'window farm' and HOLY SMOKE!
nope...not an original idea for me. there are a bunchaton of hits.
so I visit my go to first source of information...that would be Wikipedia
- A Windowfarm is a hydroponic urban gardening system that was originally developed by Britta Riley using open-source designs. A Windowfarm is an indoor garden that allows for year-round growing in almost any window. It lets plants use natural light, the climate control of your living space, and organic “liquid soil.”
My go to next source is U-toobs.
It's like an Afternooooon Delight.
er...I mean...moving on.. a random sample
Window Farming: A Do-It-Yourself Veggie Venture
- If you have a green thumb, a window and a serious Do-It-Yourself ethic, you too, can be a farmer ... even in your downtown apartment building. Spring is here, and for urban dwellers with no access to soil, hydroponic gardening is a way to grow fresh veggies indoors.
.
"Window farming," as it is called, is catching on in New York City and beyond. Window farmers use recycled 1.5 liter water bottles, clay pellets, plastic tubing and inexpensive fish tank air pumps to create their indoor gardens. There are now 4,000 registered users at windowfarms.org. Farmers are tending to their greens everywhere from the U.S. to Italy, Israel and Hong Kong.
AHA! A link...aaaaand...it's expired. Oh Well...Moving on.
- With farm land decreasing at the same time that population numbers are increasing globally, vertical hydroponic gardens may be one solution to the world’s food shortages. Being ecologically and economically sound, hydroponic gardening is one of the fastest growing areas of patenting in the U.S. today. The trend is far from restricted to the U.S. Many innovators across the globe are creating these gardens in urban environments.
.
Some of these farms are large scale, such as the vertical greenhouse called Plantagon, which is set to be built in Linkoping, Sweden. The concept is a helix system in which plants are transported on a special elevator. The crops grow during the slow ride down the helix, and an automatic harvesting machine allows the food to be harvested in batches.
.
A smaller scale, grassroots urban agriculture movement was launched in New York City in 2008 by Britta Riley and Rebecca Bray. What started as a simple idea has since turned into a worldwide movement, and a company called Windowfarms. More than 33,000 people now participate in the Windowfarms community.
there are literally hundred more to chose from..both text and video.
and as I smell the euphoric aroma of fried bacon wafting upon the breeze...I axe myself
"Self...looking those winders in the SteemDreem...they be just sitting there".
