RE: Building a Small Farm | Propagating for FREE Plants

in #homesteading7 years ago

I've done this before with rosemary, mint and basil, but haven't thought of it for years! I should absolutely propagate some more! Currently, we're saving milkweed and redbud seeds to start new plants in the Spring to sell. We missed the wild cherry season, but we have dozens of those, too.

My mom (in Virginia) has an old English walnut tree that fills out it's fruit really well - which is apparently very rare. A young lady stopped by the other day and wants to take a few grafts to see if she can reproduce the quality.

I've also saved the last pears from a 300 yr old (probably an exaggeration) pear tree from her property and started new trees from them that are just about ready to be transplanted into our orchard.

Our orchard has also been neglected for 10+ years, so my husband and I are slowly cutting back the saplings and brambles, etc to let the fruit trees breathe again. This time next year we'll be drowning in fruit! So much fun!

That orchard sounds AMAZING and it will be such a good feeling to see it back in full life - though as you mentioned, you'll be VERY busy dealing with all the fruit. lol.

Hopefully we'll find enough people to give some away to!! My ultimate goal is to be able to grow enough food that I can give some away to friends, family, and local churches/food banks

Hopefully we'll be able to find enough people to share it with!
