Every Homestead NEEDS Animals!!
Providing more benefit than cost, they are defiantly worth their cost! Assuming you do it right.
Far to often I see new homesteaders over zealous and eagerly jump right in. often getting animals before they even have infrastructure. this is a disservice to yourself and to the animals. they deserve to have a home built and ready to move into with food and water waiting. but once you have that worked out and your not scrambling they can prove to be highly useful.
Chickens are awesome little waist disposals that provide a food source to us and also a reliable source of quick lime if you know what your doing. They also can mix fresh compost into the topsoil of a garden while weeding it! if you like chickens you might also like Guinea Fowl. all the benefits of chickens plus they are an alarm system for predators or intruders. ours also alarm when someone gives us an egg. they are the watch dog of the bird world!
if you have alot of brush or weeds Goats are the way to go. they turn your overgrown property into food and milk. while also being able to be trained to work they can also be good companions.
here is a short clip of the animals on our homestead!
I have been working on my homestead for 7 years and I am not anywhere near close to being ready for more animals. When I am ready, then I will get them...
good plan! it saddens me to see so many people loosing thier dream because they went too fast
It hurts to see it! I like it when folks go slow and succeed. Like you guys have done really well!
if you take it slow and not expect much then periodically look back at what youve done, you will be shocked to see what has been accomplished!
