The idea of starting a homestead was not really in the picture for us, but some life changes made it a reality. I came back from a deployment in Iraq and I had to have a total knee replacement done, along with several other medical problems. I was down for over a year and the Army medically discharged me because of those problems. So with not much in the way of income coming in it was hard to make all the bills so in this process we lost our home and lots of equity that we had in it. We started looking for a place to live and that is when we knew it was time to start a homestead. We started looking for land and it had to have some good terms because we did not have the credit at that time because we had just been foreclosed on, we found a piece of land with owner financing and it was low down payment and low closing cost. This type of land is out there you just have to search for it.

It was raw land and we knew it would have to be cleared. We knew that this way we can have it done the way we wanted it, with time we could get this done. So we set out to figuring out who we could get to clear the land and the cost of this being done. This is not cheap and we knew that, I was a heavy equipment operator and I could do the work if I could rent the dozer to do it. With the medical problems continuing at the time I would not physically be able to do this I realized so we had to have it done by someone.
Here is some video of the land after we cleared it and got the electric on the property. This is the front of the property and what was cleared there.
This is the cleared area on the back side of the property.
There is a lesson here I want to share with everyone. I got the guy to clear the property but he did not get many of the roots out as he cleared it so as time went on we have trees growing back and it is not so clear anymore. So make sure of you have property cleared that you tell the person doing it you want it rooted well. We decided to turn a mistake into a benefit and we let trees in certain places grow back so there would be some in certain places. We are doing this with no debt other than the land so things will be slow as we can only do when we save money to move to another project. Things may not go as fast on our homestead as I am a disabled veteran and I can only do so much at a time. Please be patient we will get there and take you along on our journey of starting a homestead.

Thanks, Hope you have a great day!
How awesome for you! And thank the Good Lord for a nice home owner who allowed you the opportunity for financing to make your homestead dream a reality. Kudos to him or her
Thank You! We got 11.43 acres that was bare land. We are building things to live in slowly. Right now it is a older camper and motorhome. Have built a pallet cabin, working on a office trailer soon and converting it into living quarters.
That is a great start!
We just found 6.95 acres of land about 30 minutes from where we are located now. We have a newer double-wide manufactured home that we want to move. The land is for sale by owner willing to work with financing; and since hubby had ID theft/fraud about 2 years ago, we struggle sometimes as we re-establish the credit. I would prefer to buy outright, but... yeah... always the but...sigh
You can always finance it and pay off early, just make sure there is no penalty for early pay off. We will be doing Air Crete in the long run but it is all a process. There is always a but somewhere. LOL
Interesting to hear your backstory. Good luck with it all!
Thanks! Just letting people know a little about me.
Sharing to get you seen...
Thanks!
best of luck in your endeavors i will follow you so keep writing
Thanks! Will keep writing, lots to tell as we go through this journey.
Life has a funny way of providing what we really need, even when we think it's crapping on us. I found homesteading by getting totally derailed too. I look forward to watching as you progress and learn. Also, thank you for your service.
Thank You! We had the thought before all of this happened but never put much into it. It is funny how things work!
great job. keep us up on your journey
Thanks! I will be sure to share this journey with everyone. Maybe it will help someone else in their journey into homesteading.
First off, Thank you for your service! Also, very cool getting to see where you came from on the property! I always enjoy a good DIY/How-To post. :) Following you!
