Permaculture Design For Our 7.5 Acre Future Homestead

Start With The End In Mind

When my wife and I began looking at property for our future homestead we knew we wanted to implement permaculture everywhere on the property. Which of course means that we need to find a property that would fit what we wanted to do.

Of course we had no experience with permaculture at the time...so we needed to hire an expert!

"You are not allowed to buy this property until you hire someone to tell us it is even a good property!" - Said Kelly

That is when we went on a search in Texas for a up and coming designer. I like to work with up and comers, because it always seems that I one. And up and comers need a chance to prove themselves. Plus, sometimes you can get a deal with them!

We hired Pete VanDyck from DroughtProofTx.com. And he nailed our permaculture design!

Hurry Up and Wait

We couldn't be more pleased with Pete's work on the design. Now we are getting our suburban house ready for sale, saving as much finances as we can, and the good Lord willing...come fall of this year we plan on cutting those first swales!!

That's awesome!!! Thank you! I still don't fully understand what that means...but is great. :) haha.

Having your post in 2 slots and ranked #2 in the hit-parade is great. Well done!

Looks like the design has all the basics in place! Did he also do a zone map? I would like to see that too!
Are thinking about any live stock, chicken are a great start and will help with so many things. Keep us updated, very interested in your progress. Good Luck!

Mostly yes. This is completely raw, so yes like you said we stared with just the basics. All of the zones are there...but not exactly in the drawn in the overall design.

I plan on during another video of the detailed write up for the design.

YEP!!! Meat chickens will be our 2nd livestock (we currently raise rabbits), then hopefully laying hens in electric netting in a tractor system.

Thanks for following!!! LOVE Steemit!!!

We have been looking into rabbits, great fertilizer generators, do have your on pasture? I was think utilizing the Joel Saliton method four ours. Any thoughts?

Wow! The sketch makes it look like you will be growing a lot. What kinds of plants are you going to grow?

The over story will be mostly nut trees: pecan, hazelnut, and native oaks that are already there and established. The fruits that we enjoy the taste: Pear, peach, nectarines, fig, olive, blackberry, raspberry, etc. hopefully some kind of apple.

Basically anything that will grow in our zone at region. Along with a normal garden plot.

The we'd like to eventually run pigs through...turning acorns into bacon!! Thank you for watching and reading...STEEMIT IS SO AWESOME!!!!

This sketching is wat my father in law does before building a custom pool. You don't see it much with the advancement of Autocad love the look of old school drafting and sketching.

Good luck with the awesome homestead project!
Best,
Isaac

Thank you very much Isaac! Yea that is why I requested it drawn. Although...this might have been the last hand drawing design that Pete has done...and probably will ever do! haha. :) It took him awhile.

good luck with the build! I am in Texas now on vacation it's beautiful!

Thank you! Yea we've had some "not so terrible" days this week that helped cool the heat off a tad. Still hot, but nothing like what June normally is.

Thanks a ton and enjoy your vacation!!!! :)

Cheers! form Canyon Lake

Exciting! Best of luck selling your home!

Thank you very much. Good thing is the market is pretty good right now here in Texas. I do think it'll drop at some point...I just hope that drop is in 2018! haha. :)

The design looks really great, good luck on the home sale

Pete did an excellent job on it. By far my favorite part of it is how he came up with the forest swale to divert water from the front to the back for that pond.

Permaculture rules! Let's green every desert on earth and turn it into an oasis! Get back to the garden of eat'n' !!

I completely agree!!! And this property in Texas...not at all a desert, but certainly not YET an oasis!

Hi new follower, wonderful post and am going to get permaculture happening on our new property here in Australia. We'll be retiring there in a few years and at this point only have a few fruit trees planted.

Hi ya Christa! That is AWESOME!!!! There is so much Permaculture going on in Australia it is amazing. In fact, I am 99% sure that Geoff Lawton's farm is in Australia.

Have you researched any of Geoff's work?

So inspiring! I'll have my husband @bluerthangreen check you out as well--we're of like minds I think :) Following you as well.

Good luck on the project. Keep updating us.
