Having watched many How-to videos on microgreens, I decided to dip my toe into this area of growing. Winter will soon be here, and the crops I can plant outside are, therefore, limited. In that case, moving into some indoor growing is ideal.
In my Microgreens Adventure - Day 1 I talked a little about my setup. Then, in Microgreens Adventure - Day 3 I showed the seed germination and discussed the mistakes I'd ALREADY made!
Now it's Day 5 and the sprouts have really taken off. For those of you who'd like to sit back, relax and watch a short video on my setup - here is is!
What's Working
Well, so far, germination has been a triumph. I'm really happy with the seeds I bought as almost all of them seem to actually be growing. The amaranthe, which I was worried about being behind, has actually burst into neon pink-ish life within a mere 24 hours and is quickly catching up with the radishes. I also took the advice of @hoschitrooper and halved the amount of sunflower and radish seeds on each coconut coir mat so now I have three trays on the go.
What's Gone Wrong
I REALLY should've sprayed my 3% hydrogen peroxide on Day 1 as the sunflower seed husks have quite a bit of fine mould on them. I'm hoping once the seedlings throw off the husks, the mold will go - as long as I keep spraying. In addition, though the white catering trays are cheap, robust, food grade quality and the right size, buying white ones might have been a mistake. A little light is still able to get through and instead of the seedlings all growing directly upwards, some have been bending towards the light.
What's Next?
I would think within a couple of days, the seeds will need to come out of the dark and under the growlights. That's when the real test starts as I'm not entirely sure my lights are up for the job. Still, this is all a learning process and, guess what? I'm having fun! So there's that!
If you've got any tips or advice, PLEASE let me know as I'm a total newbie at this. ;) And, as always, check back for updates!
looks better ... but i think its to less place for em anymore ... giggles... but a good man told me... it your choice.. its your project, you need the experience so try it take a look what happens and if it didnt work so try and try it again :D
Lol, there's still too many?! Ha! I haven't got much more room now so I'll run these and then try again with the next lot. :D
you have to see how big the Plants or the fruits get... so it could be nice, so im still waiting to see what happens next so lets take a look ;)
Watching this with interest.I started sprouting sunflower seeds today for the hens - 1st time I've tried it.
Oh cool! My plan is to give excess to chickens and my aviary birds too.
