Behind our house is woods, actually all around our house but especially behind us, and it's a major part of our one acre homestead.. But after living here a while, we noticed that we don't go up there much..
I knew that in order to live and prosper on one acre, every bit of land would have to be put to good use, but any time I thought about doing something up there it would always come to nothing in the end.
We needed access.. A clear and defined way in and out.
We know a good deal about herbology and wild plants, and to this end the knowledge was a hindrance. The woods are absolutely full of rare and useful plants and I was too busy making sure I didn't step on any of them to be either quick paced or productive.
To this end..
About a year ago I started work on the stairs. Had a few people gave me odd looks as it led nowhere..
It just was..
I knew at some point it would take us places, but those were unknown to me at the time. 'Opportunities will present themselves,' I thought, never being one to go in for the concept of useless land..
Just opportunities to be creative.
A year later the stairs are still a work in progress but they are finally starting to lead somewhere...
We have the mushroom logs. (Still a work in progress. I will do a separate post on them later.)
The honey bees.
And the shed.
The stairs aren't endless, as it pertains to never ending, but the possibilities are endless.
Who knows where they may yet take us.

Good post tank you.
Thank you!
Digger, great post and the stairs do lead somewhere ... they lead "UP" which is good enough for now! Thanks for the post and for the pics of your lovely homestead.
Thank you! Ill try to get more out soon!
It's almost like a start to a fairytale or fantasy story! The steps that slowly appeared over the years that everybody puzzled over, then one day they discovered where they were going. 😉
Thank you! I was going for something like that.
Perhaps Wayne should have tried your stairs instead! LOL
I envy your woods and shade and really like the variety you have on your land.
LOL thats funny! Some days I love it outer days i don't.. You can do much more in the shade then People think, but we will never be tomato farmers here. :( Something to keep in mind next time, both have there merits!
It is a lot of hard work but so worth it once you formulate your ideas about where those stairs are going. Great work it looks so good. One acre is a lot of land. Be well and thanks for sharing. 🐓🐓
It really is when your trying to make use of all of it, and more so when its mostly shaded.. No large corn patches for us lol I think if I were to do it again I would look for a place with an acre of sun right around the house.. In a perfect world a couple acres of woods around that! Thanks for the comment!
Glad you stopped by. The last place we had looked a lot like yours. I tried gardening in tiers with some success. Her we have the full sun and I fried some of those vegetables up in a hurry. Learning curve! Haha🐓🐓
Is that just 2x4's and are you planning on putting concrete or something in the forms?
What we have done is make 2X4 frames we set after the ground was leveled. then fill them in and around with dirt.. the point was just to have Level ground, the frames just hold that dirt in place.. wouldn't mind a layer of gravel on top though!
Hey, I am a bot and my goal is to bring a smile
on your face with an awww picture:
