RE: Gingseng planting: Farm the forest floor

Thanks!!
Some large scale cultivators start plants in hay bails or something similar to act as a seedling bed. I definitely wouldn't do plugs though. Ginseng is incredibly finicky and does not seem to like contact with plastic and would run the risk of drying out if you forgot to water one day. Also plugs would have the potential to create a unfavorable shape, man roots get the big money overseas. You want the roots to be strong and naturally shaped. This happens by natural stressors in their environment like hard soil. We have successfully transplanted seedlings to other beds in the forest and gifted some plants to friends. Ginseng likes cooler-temperate weather and NEEDS a cold winter to germinate properly. We are in zone 7 and our plants seem to be doing just fine, zones 5 & 6 would definitely be favorable.
