BOOM! Congrats, you deserve it!
Thank you!!
Good job getting it done for so little money and great idea to repurpose those containers. Are you keeping them for meat or eggs?
Thanks!
Once we get the system going, where I can hatch enough of them to be sustainable, they will be our first intentional meat birds! Pretty exciting!! But the eggs will Ben handy too! I think a lot of them will be going forhatching once we get to that point. :)
Sounds like a great plan. I love that word, intentional. I've heard you can earn a lot of money selling hatching eggs in the right markets.
Yeah! Not sure if that market is HERE but, I'll find out, I suppose! ;) haha
Nice work and I'm sure the quail appreciate the fruits of your labors! I'm betting you'll see more regular egg laying in the coming days.
I think this breed is kind of sporadic anyway, so I am not hoping too hard. But I hope for enough to be able to get some more quail out of the deal! I'll have to start up the incubator next week!
I do love building stuff. It feels so great after!
nice peek at the skittish birds had me thinking of a screen saver for a monitor :) I sure like that saying better safe then sorry and it's very true :) thanks for sharing and caring and help :)
Thanks for stopping over! You're gonna have to start making your posts on Steemit soon! :) you're absolutely welcome for the help!
So Cute, So tasty! Ha haha. you eat them right? I have to know how you format your posts btw. Thanks for a good post :)
They will be our first meat birds once we get the system going. Enough eggs to hatch, etc etc.
Ah, well, figure out what you want to know specifically and I will help you out! Tell me on slack! :)
Right on! What a great use of the structure and super cheap! Good idea on the shade board. We cover our coop with a mesh type cloth for our chickens but I've thought of putting something solid up for them. Fingers crossed for your eggs! That girl quail needs backup! LOL
I think something solid would be essential once it gets rainy for you again.
Yeah that poor girl... they seem pretty content tho!!
Amazing work you are doing with these animals! I admire you and hope more people can be like you as protectors. Keep sharing posts like this one and don´t forget the most important on earth is to take care others beings! Good bless you and nice to meet you!
Greatings from Venezuela ;*
Thank you for the kind words! Many people raise their meat quail in pens off the ground. But since they're ground birds, I kind of find that awful! Lol thanks for stopping by! I really appreciate it!
You are welcome @farmstead :D
The pen looks great, good job!
What do you do with the quail? Eat them or their eggs, or something else entirely?
Thank you!! They will be our first meat birds. But we need more to make it a little more sustainable. Right now I am saving her eggs to put into the incubator. :)
Yum, quail is delicious!
I haven't had it! Hahaha but they said it tastes like the dark meat chicken? I like that, so I figured it'd be fine. Hahah I decided on the quail for our first meat bird because typically you have to have quite a few and they all look the same! Haha figuring I couldn't get too attached to any single one. Haha I do love their sounds.
Those quail sure are fast. That is a great home that you have for them and I am sure that they are very happy. Hopefully they will give you more eggs to show their gratitude. I like how you do things the right way, the first time and how you want to be "better safe than sorry." If I was a chicken rooster or quail, I think I would like to live with you...HaHa! :)
Hopefully they won't know they're for food until it's too late!! ;) haha thank you as always!!
OMG! That sounds funny and sad too. I could never do what you do. Just don't ever name them. :)
OH I don't name anyone! Haha only name pets.
And believe me, that won't be my job! Told husband that if he wanted to have meat animals, the meat part was all on him. I will feed them and make them feel loved. Give them a great life. But that other stuff, no way. That shit better come to me looking like I bought it at the store! Lol
Here you go again, making me laugh like crazy...ROFLMAO!!! I already know that you don't name them. I was just reminding you. I can't type because I am laughing so hard! But see, you are already attached because you said that you will give them a great life and make them feel loved! Just don't eat your first quail because that one has special meaning. "Looking like I bought it at the store?" More like looking like it came from a 5 star restaurant! LOL! :)
Pre cooked and all! ;) hahaha. Well, he did put in his vows that he will de-bone all meat for me. Not even joking. That was all him! Cause I don't eat meat on the bone. Hahaha.
Awesome .......
Thanks!
Wow, I couldn't believe when I saw your first picture. That is an awesome structure, especially for something you built practically overnight! Then I read that it was already there, but still I'm impressed. I'm sure those birds will appreciate it too (they better).
Congrats on the success of the post as well. You must be excited. Now my three cents won't make too much of a difference any more, though you got my upvote. However, it got me looking into #curie, and I think I'll try submitting stuff for them regularly. See what happens.
I submitted a post last night successfully! I have yet to receive the $10. So I'm morn sure how's long that takes. :) otherwise, very simple and I already had a streemian account from joining MSP before.
nice! When I get mine cleaned up I'll have to share it too.
Yeah! Is it an on or off ground kind?
Well their indoor space is off the ground but the whole coop is on the ground. I'm dealing with rats and mice at the moment. 😖
Yeah rodents can be a pain!! I haven't dealt with them IN my chicken coop. But mice like to hang with the quail in their pen sometimes.
I wish they'd chase them off but it seems like they just make buddies out of them!
Hahah, yeah, turds. Well, it's probably like the Stockholm Syndrome or something.
I had to look that up ... HA LMAO
Very nice! Great content!
Good job. I think it all looks great! Keep up the good work!
Thank you!! I am glad it was as "easy" as it was. Would have been much more difficult to do anything for them from scratch as it would have cost a lot more money.
Hey there! I just wanted to inform you that your article has been included and linked in the most recent issue of the Weekly Homesteading Newsletter! Please check it out if you have the time! Thank you and have a great day!
Thanks as always!
We keep Pharaoh quail now. It is interesting to see how other people setup their pens.
Oh? Awesome! I'd love to see your set up! :D Are you new to Steemit?! Welcome! Are you a homesteader??
Yes, I'm new to Steemit. I guess we would be urban homesteaders. :) We live in the city, but we are raising quail and growing a few food plants.
That's great!! You should join us here! https://steemit.com/steemithomesteaders/@greenacrehome/announcement-steemithomesteaders-slack-community ---- If you're interested in joining a chatting community. We've got a couple urban homesteaders there!!
Thanks for the link. I will check it out.
Bobwhites were our first quail! They're so pretty.
Well done getting all the housing done in that heat!
Oh yeah?? I'm hoping to set up another pen of some sort to do Coturnix for quicker turn around. The bobwhites are so slow growing. I appreciate that but it doesn't feel very sustainable. Do you have other quail too?
Thanks for stopping by!!!
I only have Japanese now. They are very fast turn around, prolific layers, but short lived.
Yes, that is exactly why I want to get the Coturnix also! :D
Oh, do you have any suggestions on integrating new quail with the older quail? I have some youngins that should go outside at the end of the month.
I've never really found integrating new quail to problematic, unlike chickens. As long as there is room for them to get out of each others way if needed, it doesn't usually get to aggressive. You do get the odd aggressive quail in the Japanese, but I had no problems at all with the Bobwhites. I figure the aggressive ones get to be the first to go to the pot!😉
I already had issues with some of the adults I have pecking one of the other's head bloody. He was in ICU for a while healing. So far so good since, though.
I haven't had much issue with chickens... (yet) Hmmm. We might need to teach each other our ways! hahaha
My chickens are in rather close quarters, so I'm a bit more cautious when I introduce knew ones. Having said that, since the ISA browns have gone, I've never had quite the same integration issues.
Ah I don't have those kinds of chickens. Are they a little more hardcore than others? More mean? I mean, chickens are already kind of jerks to begin with. Haha I definitely wouldn't want even more mean ones! Haha
I could understand having more issues in tighter quarters for sure! I think free ranging helps my situation a ton!
ISA browns are sweet enough towards people, but nasty to new comer chickens! It took me about two months to get some sort of equilibrium with them when the news ones came in.
I need to sort out my quail now they're in season and take out the excess males. I've got a female with a bald patch already. She must be the pretty one! Lol!
