A Boy and His Service Dog - A Sweet Special Bond

in #homesteading7 years ago

Everyday I see the glimmer of spark between Luke and his boy Herry.

Herry is not only Lukes service dog but his best friend. Herry is there for Luke, wherever Luke is you will find Herry at his feet. If I pause long enough to look at Luke and Herry, to notice the love they have for each other, I feel joy. The other day Luke was in the shower and I looked in to check on him and there was Herry laying on the floor waiting for Luke to finish.

We put Luke on a waiting list for a service dog when he was 8 years old, it was long wait. A 7 year wait. When Luke was 15 his name came up for his dog. That whole process was extremely emotional, but that is subject for another blog post on another day. As of this year Luke has had Herry for 6 years.

It is interesting to see how much Herry understands that he is Luke's boy, even though Luke doesn't give Herry a whole lot of feedback. The feedback Herry is given is a little petting here and there, treats and the calling of his name, Herry. One of Luke and Herry's favorite thing to do is play hide and seek. Luke will go hide and then we will say, "Herry, where is Luke?". To see Herry run to find Luke and jump around in excitement when he finds him is enjoyable to watch.

I love to see the relationship between a dog and its human. I am not sure there are words to describe the love a dog has for its family, especially such a sweet special needs human like Luke.

Thank you for sharing this time with me! Thank you for encouraging me with your comments and votes.

Very touching. Thank you

Why did it take so long for him to get his dog?

Because the organization we used provides free dogs and travel to and from Georgia. They are an amazing organization and are only capable of training a certain number of dogs a year. The demand for service dogs keeps growing.

Great story of friendship and loyalty! I got a lump in my throat now!!! Thank you for sharing!

Aww this is great! Thanks for sharing.

What Herry does for Luke is indescribable. Even without much feedback, Herry knows that he belongs to Luke. There is a special bond there that we'll never fully understand. I would love to see a post about your trip to GA to pick Herry up for the first time. Do you still have those old pics? ;)

Thanks for sharing, that really is too bad that it took that long to get the dog!

My grandson had a service dog for 10 years. He just lost him before Christmas. He will be getting a new service dog at the end of this month. The first dog took years of waiting. I have no idea why this particular time is different. Thanks for sharing the love story between a special needs child and their service dog.

@findingjoy Another super touching post. I love Herry even more for reading his story. Upvoted.
