Another Busy Day - October 18, 2024 @goldenoakfarm

Bed in living room crop Oct 2024.jpg

On Friday I was up at 5:30AM and got the post up. Then I cleaned up the kitchen and my helper friend arrived at 8AM. We figured out where the bed for my sister would go in the living room and got it downstairs and made up.

I had been afraid bringing the bed down would mean rearranging couches, etc. But it fit just fine by the masonry heater which won’t be in use for a couple more weeks.

With the bed out of the spare room, it was obviously well past time to process the garlic still hanging there. So I got a sheet and we got it down and into the office.

I won’t be planting any of it due to the disease it got. So it was a quick job of snipping the bulbs from the stalks and bagging them.

My son had brought the onions from the woodshed to the old root cellar just prior to the frost on October 15th.

My general helper arrived at 10AM while we were doing garlic. She was going to put the protective spirals on the Little Trees and move mulch from the trunks. That took her about an hour.

My helper friend got the mess cleaned up in the spare room and then headed out to cut down the Anne raspberry.

My general helper finished the Little Trees and came in and we visited for about 1½ hours.

My son went out before noon and finally finished all the pressure washing and put the washer in the back of the car. My general helper and I took it to the barn and put it away. Then she headed out.

I got some lunch and was out mowing by 1:30PM. It took me about 2½ hours to get the leaves up. At some point, my helper friend and I will have to go out and get all the leaves out of the gardens and various crevices. But for now, I’m just keeping them cleaned up enough so the mower can do it.

I had just sat down to rest when my brother got home. Shortly after that my sister arrived from her 5 day journey from New Mexico. We got her unpacked and we each made a supper.

I was really exhausted and went to bed by 8PM.

On Saturday I’m hoping to be in some kind of shape to harvest and process leeks and maybe broccoli. My sister will be recovering from the long drive so we have nothing planned besides a nice supper.

21 pounds of garlic is a good harvest. You did quite a lot yesterday, taking care of chores here and there. It's good you got your son and helper friend to assist you. Now that the weekend is here it's certainly time to rest more and prepare for the coming week. Thanks for writing.

So much garlic for this year. You and your helper worked as a very efficient team.
The onions look quite big, we only have very small red onions here. Most big onions were imported. Most cheap garlics are from China!
The autumn colours start to be prominent in your garden. The leaves look lovely in evening sunshine.
So, you’ll be having a lot to do with your sister this week.

Have a wonderful time!

Garlic and onions are stored by hanging, this is agriculture. The pumpkin looks huge. Very nice and productive day

Preparations for the next season in top gear, that's great.
Nice having your sister around.

Another busy day you really had. Hope you actually have a time to rest
