Christmas - Larry and Lee collage crop Dec 2024.jpg

On Christmas morning, I was awakened about 6AM after not getting to sleep until close to 1AM. I finally dragged out of bed at 6:15AM because I thought my son was doing stoves. We’d agreed to do stockings and presents early, so he could go to sleep.

Then I realized I’d forgotten to fill the stockings before I went to bed. Well, Larry was beside himself because it WAS AFTER 6AM and he’d not been fed. He was worse than usual, up on counters and tables, something verboten! He was REALLY obnoxious. So I got my son into the living room as fast as possible before Larry destroyed the house. We did his stocking first and he was delighted with his mouse steeped in catnip. There’s not a lot of room in that basket for him normally, but he managed to enjoy the mouse in there.

He had 2 meals of things he won’t ever get again (so expensive!) and I showed them to him and asked which he wanted. He selected chicken and duck for breakfast. So I got him fed and things settled down some.

My son and I emptied the stockings. Each one had a scratch ticket for $2 in it. He saw mine and wanted to swap, so I agreed. He scratched it and got nothing. So I offered him the one from his father’s stocking, not realizing it was a crossword puzzle one. He wasn’t delighted about that, but set about figuring it out.

In the meantime, I opened my stocking stuff and the presents. Then I did the remaining ticket. I won $5. That makes 2 years in a row I have actually won something on the scratch tickets for the stockings. It’s the only time I buy tickets. Last year I got $105 and for the 32 years before that we might have won a total of $10 in small increments widely spaced apart.

So once we were done, he headed to bed and I cleaned up the mess.

I got the cranberry pecan log out and rolled it in the remaining crumb mix and tried it out. It was really good! I heated up some of the Yorkshire pudding I’d been sent home with and that was breakfast along with some of my candy bars.

The shades were up because the candles and tree is left on all night. So I went around turning the candles off as the sun came up.

Larry spent the morning chasing his mouse around the house. I talked with my sister while she opened her presents then sat and read FB posts and looked at photos Tom and family were sending me.

I watched a movie and around 1PM I was very tired so I went to lie down. I woke up at 4PM. I got my son up by 5PM and we started our Christmas dinner.

I was making bacon wrapped scallops, baked Alaskan cod, greens salad with kale from the garden, and heating up the Yorkshire pudding. My son was making scallops as the chef at his restaurant makes them.

Except he changed his mind and made them in the bacon fat left from frying up the remainder of the bacon. He also made oven French fries and had some of the cod and the salad without the kale. We had the eggnog my brother makes to drink.

Larry had rabbit for supper and for the second time in 1 day, he POLISHED the plate, something he’s not done since I brought him home 18 months ago.

Coyote tracks crop Dec 2024.jpg

There was a lot of oily remainder left from the cooking and I made several trips outside to dump them over the bank. Between my 2nd and 3rd trips, a coyote came to check the offerings. His tracks parallel my path I made in and out. There were also dozens of bunny tracks in this area.

My middle brother called just as I was trying to start the masonry heater when we’d finished eating. We talked for about an hour and my youngest brother arrived home from CT as we talked. My youngest brother told me all about the food he’d had, once I was off the phone. Then he headed to bed as he had an early morning at the farm on Thursday.

I finally got the masonry heater going and sat down to watch movies while I waited for it to get going. I finally got to bed about 10PM.

On Thursday my helper friend is back at noon. He has a couple errands and I hope to make some bottles of vanilla extract from the beans my youngest brother brought home from vacation. Then we will tackle another section of the pantry.
